The effect of repeated laundering on the softness and smoothness of terry-cloth towels using a sound spectrum analysis

Maruska Giselle Salvatierra Blaisdell et al.

Summary: The study found that front-loading washing machines are more likely to reduce the softness and smoothness of terry-cloth towels compared to top-loading machines, and line-drying has a greater impact on softness and smoothness than tumble-drying. Washing temperature has no significant effect, and using fabric softener can mitigate the negative effects of line-drying on the softness and smoothness of terry cloth.

Effect of Fabric Characteristics and Drum Rotation Speeds on the Movements and Drying Performances of Clothes in a Tumble Dryer

Jiyul Lee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the movements of clothes in a tumble dryer based on fabric characteristics and drum rotation speeds, and examined their impact on drying performances. Regression models were developed to understand the relationship between fabric characteristics, movements, and drying performances. The findings showed that increasing the drum rotation speed led to dynamic movements at the center of the drum, while at higher speeds, clothes primarily rotated along the drum wall. Four patterns of clothing movements were identified, and seven new movement indices were introduced for the dryer. The study also found that clothing movements in the dryer were different from those in the washer due to the variations in their internal environment. The drying rates, shrinkages, and smoothness appearance grades of clothes were influenced by the drum rotation speed, with cotton samples exhibiting lower drying rates, higher shrinkages, and lower smoothness appearance grades compared to polyester samples. Additionally, T-shirts had higher shrinkage rates and smoothness appearance grades compared to dress shirts. The findings also indicated that moisture regain, elongation, standard deviation of movement distance, and the number of tumbles significantly affected the drying rate, shrinkage, and smoothness appearance grade.

The transverse motion of fabrics in domestic tumble dryers under different drying conditions

Xinchen Yu et al.

Summary: This study used a high-speed detection system to track the transverse motion of fabrics in tumble dryers, finding that fabric motion was complex and influenced by factors such as fabric size and load mass. Increasing the size of the disperse region improved fabric mixing and air-fabric contact, leading to higher drying efficiency and better fabric appearance.

The effects of fabric's mechanical properties on its motion and drying performance in a domestic tumble dryer

Xinchen Yu et al.

Summary: The study measured and compared the mechanical properties of 10 different fabrics to investigate the impact of fabric properties on textile motion and drying performance in a domestic tumble dryer. Fabric motions were found to be complicated during the drying process and influenced mainly by fabric weight. Regression models were developed to predict drying indexes based on motion indexes with an explanatory power of around 90%.

Influence of load mass and drum speed on fabric motion and performance of a heat pump tumble dryer

Lovrenc Novak et al.

Summary: The study investigated fabric motion in the drum and its relation to the performance parameters of a heat pump tumble dryer. Statistical analysis was used to determine the correlation between fabric distribution and dryer performance. The results allow for optimization of dryer operating parameters to improve energy efficiency and condensate mass flow rate.

Dynamics of cotton textile motion in a domestic tumble dryer and its effect on drying performance

Xinchen Yu et al.

Summary: By using a high-speed video camera to track a tracer textile in a tumble dryer, researchers investigated the impact of mechanical action on textiles and drying performance. Through analysis of variances and regression analysis, it was found that textiles with more complex and flexible dynamics tended to have better drying performance.
