Brain lesions disrupting addiction map to a common human brain circuit

Juho Joutsa et al.

Summary: Drug addiction is a significant public health crisis, and new treatments are urgently needed. Research has shown that focal brain damage can lead to addiction remission, which can be used to identify potential therapeutic targets. The study analyzed cohorts of smokers with addiction and found that specific patterns of brain connectivity were associated with addiction remission. These findings were reproducible across different cohorts and specific to addiction metrics.

Lesions causing hallucinations localize to one common brain network

Na Young Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that brain lesions causing hallucinations are located in different brain regions but within a single connected brain network, with additional connections within this network dictating the sensory modality of the hallucinations; lesions causing visual hallucinations were connected to the lateral geniculate nucleus in the thalamus, while lesions causing auditory hallucinations were connected to the dentate nucleus in the cerebellum. These results provide insight into the causal neuroanatomical substrate of hallucinations.

Lesion network mapping demonstrates that mind-wandering is associated with the default mode network

Carissa L. Philippi et al.

Summary: Functional neuroimaging research has consistently linked brain structures within the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN) with mind-wandering. Lesion network mapping analysis in this study showed that lesions affecting the DMN and FPN were associated with diminished mind-wandering, with the left inferior parietal lobule within the DMN showing the strongest association with reduced mind-wandering.

Summary: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are characterized by a compulsion to seek and consume substances, which may lead to morphological changes in neural circuits. VBM studies show convergence and divergence in brain regions and volume effects, providing insights into disease progression and therapeutic approaches.

Summary: The cue-reactivity paradigm was analyzed using meta-analytic techniques to decompose brain activity related to drug and natural reward cues. The study found distinct brain activity convergence regions for drug-related cues, while natural reward cues showed different convergence regions.
