Quality of life of stroke survivors in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Umar Muhammad Bello et al.

Summary: This study examines the quality of life (QoL) among African stroke survivors, the outcome measures adopted, and predictors of QoL. Results show that stroke survivors in Africa have lower QoL compared to healthy controls of the same age, with post-stroke disability, depression, and stroke severity being common predictors. There is a need for culturally validated assessment tools and more comprehensive evaluation of post-stroke QoL in Africa to improve the quality of life for stroke survivors.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.

Global Epidemiology of Stroke and Access to Acute Ischemic Stroke Interventions

Vasu Saini et al.

Summary: This review provides an up-to-date overview of stroke and large vessel occlusion (LVO) globally, as well as the eligibility and access to IV thrombolysis (IVT) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) worldwide. Despite advances in treatment eligibility in the past 5 years, access to acute stroke care and utilization of MT or IVT remains low, highlighting a significant gap among eligible patients. Multiple global initiatives are currently in progress to improve systems of care and bridge this gap.

Psychometric properties of the short form of the Stroke Impact Scale in German-speaking stroke survivors

Anna Coppers et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the construct validity, reliability, and responsiveness of the SF-SIS in German-speaking stroke patients. Results showed high correlations of SF-SIS with SIS 2.0 and EQ-5D-5L, adequate discriminatory ability, and lack of confirmation for responsiveness hypotheses.
