Farzad Mehrjo et al.

Summary: Highly ordered periodic mesoporous organosilica with large pores (9.3 nm) was synthesized and incorporated in polyethersulfone nanofiltration membrane after functionalized by p-phenylenediamine. The modified membrane with 0.25 wt% of PPD showed enhanced hydrophilicity, pure water flux, and anti-fouling properties, making it the ideal membrane. Facile preparation of polyvinylidene fluoride substrate supported thin film composite polyamide nanofiltration: Effect of substrate pore size

Junhui Wu et al.

Summary: PVDF is rarely used as a substrate membrane for thin film composite polyamide nanofiltration membrane due to its hydrophobic surface pushing water away during interfacial polymerization. In this study, it was found that the pore size of the PVDF substrate greatly influences the morphologies and surface properties of the TFC PA NF membrane. The TFC membrane prepared with a PVDF substrate of 100 nm exhibited a 27.0 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 pure water permeance, and a 96.2% Na2SO4 rejection, demonstrating a facile and effective method for preparation of PVDF substrate supported PA NF membrane.

Tuning the hydraulic permeability and molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) of surface nano-structured ultrafiltration membranes

Yian Chen et al.

Summary: Surface modification with a tethered layer of poly(acrylic acid) allows for tuning the hydraulic permeability and molecular weight cutoff performance of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane. Adjustment of atmospheric pressure plasma activation and graft polymerization conditions enables effective performance tuning. The synthesis of membranes with a range of hydraulic permeability or molecular weight cutoff for a given parameter overcomes the traditional tradeoff between hydraulic permeability and MWCO.

Comparison of potential drinking water source contamination across one hundred US cities

Sean W. D. Turner et al.

Summary: In the U.S., most cities rely on surface water sources that include treated wastewater, with concentrations in the Midwest, South, and Texas. Potential contamination of drinking water supplies from local and distal source watersheds is a concern, as water quality sampling surveys are often inconsistent and incomplete. The diversity of anthropogenic activities across watersheds leads to disparities in potential contamination of drinking water supplies for large cities.

Does interfacial vaporization of organic solvent affect the structure and separation properties of polyamide RO membranes?

Lu Elfa Peng et al.

Summary: The study showed that using organic solvents with higher vapor pressure during the interfacial polymerization process led to the formation of larger voids in the polyamide thin film and higher membrane water permeability. By preparing polyamide thin films at a free interface, the vapor effect was suppressed, resulting in the disappearance of nanovoids and nearly identical membrane permeability regardless of the organic solvent used for the process.
