Durable cell and gene therapy potential patient and financial impact: US projections of product approvals, patients treated, and product revenues

Colin M. Young et al.

Summary: Cell and gene therapies have the potential to transform patient lives, but payers are concerned about unsustainable costs. However, a model predicts that the development of dozens of durable therapies by 2030 is unlikely to threaten the financial sustainability of the US healthcare system.

Development of an induced pluripotent stem cell-specific microRNA assay for detection of residual undifferentiated cells in natural killer cell therapy products

Liam Chung et al.

Summary: Allogeneic cell therapy platforms derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have gained popularity due to limitations of autologous cell therapy. However, the risk of residual undifferentiated cells (iPSCs) associated with teratoma formation needs to be addressed. A sensitive miRNA-based assay was developed to detect residual iPSCs in differentiated cell samples.

Summary: Research on global clinical trials revealed that the USA leads in nontherapeutic trials with large participation numbers, while Japan takes the lead in therapeutic trials with smaller participant numbers. Studies on disorders of the circulatory system, as well as the nervous and visual systems, are particularly notable.

Summary: The Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) Stock Project in Japan, which started in 2013, aims to produce and release clinical-grade HLA homozygous iPSC lines that can cover almost the entire Japanese population. The project has already begun distributing cell lines, conducting quality control tests, and has future plans in place.

Robust detection of translocations in lymphoma FFPE samples using targeted locus capture-based sequencing

Amin Allahyar et al.

Summary: The authors introduced a new method for detecting translocations in preserved samples, which showed high sensitivity and specificity, outperforming traditional methods; FFPE-TLC is a powerful clinical tool for accurate rearrangement detection in FFPE specimens.

Whole-genome optical mapping of bone-marrow myeloma cells reveals association of extramedullary multiple myeloma with chromosome 1 abnormalities

Eva Kriegova et al.

Summary: The research identified an association between extramedullary disease (EMM) and chromosome 1 abnormalities at the genomic level, distinguishing it from intramedullary multiple myeloma (MM). EMM patients showed more deletions and fewer interchromosomal translocations in their genomic structure, as well as copy number loss in the 17p13 region.
