The relationship between sleep and depression and bipolar disorder in children and young people

Monica Comsa et al.

Summary: This narrative literature review explores the relationship between sleep difficulties and affective disorders in children and young people. Specific sleep disorders are associated with depression, while insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disorders are associated with both depression and bipolar disorder. Sleep difficulties are more prevalent in affective disorders and can impact the severity of symptoms and social and academic functioning. Non-pharmacological interventions can help prevent relapse in affective disorders.

Altered responsiveness of the antioxidant system in chronically stressed animals: modulation by chronic lurasidone treatment

Vittoria Spero et al.

Summary: Stressful events can trigger a strong antioxidant response, which can be affected by genetic factors and previous adverse experiences. The antipsychotic drug lurasidone can restore this impaired antioxidant response in specific brain regions.

Tolerability, Safety, and Effectiveness of Two Years of Treatment with Lurasidone in Children and Adolescents with Bipolar Depression

Melissa P. DelBello et al.

Summary: The 2-year study on the long-term safety and effectiveness of lurasidone in children and adolescents with bipolar depression showed that the treatment was generally well tolerated, safe, and effective with minimal effects on weight, metabolic parameters or prolactin. The study also indicated low rates of discontinuation due to adverse events, and continued improvement in depressive symptoms.

Comorbidity Between Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents: Bridge Symptoms and Relevance of Risk and Protective Factors

Deniz Konac et al.

Summary: This study utilized network analysis to identify bridge symptoms connecting depression and anxiety symptoms, and explored the impact of risk factors like peer relational difficulties and stressful life events on the association between individual symptoms. Prosocial behavior was found to have negative associations with symptoms of both disorders, indicating its potential role as an important protective factor.
