Chameleonic metal-bound isocyanides: a π-donating CuI-center imparts nucleophilicity to the isocyanide carbon toward halogen bonding

Mikhail A. Kinzhalov et al.

Summary: This study discovered a novel mechanism for the formation of bifurcated mu(2)-XMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS(C,C) halogen bonds, induced by the nucleophilic properties of two Cu-I-bound isocyanide groups. The theoretical calculations further confirmed the nature of this bonding.

Halogen-bond-assisted radical activation of glycosyl donors enables mild and stereoconvergent 1,2-cis-glycosylation

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: The chemistry of carbohydrates has a long history, and a simple, stereoselective and efficient glycosylation method is still needed for studying sugars. This study presents a strategy for 1,2-cis-glycosylation without using metals or strong acids. The method activates glycosyl donors through a radical cascade, resulting in the formation of 1,2-cis-glycosides with high stereoselectivity. The reaction shows remarkable tolerance to functional groups and is applicable to a broad range of donors.

Chameleonic metal-bound isocyanides: a π-donating CuI-center imparts nucleophilicity to the isocyanide carbon toward halogen bonding

Mikhail A. Kinzhalov et al.

Summary: In the isostructural cocrystals [CuI3(CNXyl)(3)]center dot CHX3 (X = Br, I), the blocked carbon lone pairs of the adjacent Cu-I-bound isocyanide groups exhibit nucleophilic properties induced by a pi-donating d(10)[Cu-I] center and form bifurcated halogen bonds with the sigma-hole of an X center of CHX3. This halogen bonding is not supported by any attractive XMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISCu interactions. The true halogen bonding nature of the contacts was confirmed theoretically by DFT calculations using multiple computational tools.

Bifurcated μ2-I•••(N,O) Halogen Bonding: The Case of (Nitrosoguanidinate)NiII Cocrystals with lodine(I)-Based σ-Hole Donors

Zarina M. Efimenko et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the cocrystallization of nitrosoguanidinate complexes with various iodine compounds to form new solid structures featuring asymmetric bifurcated halogen bonds. DFT calculations were used to evaluate the energetic features of these halogen bonds, revealing that the I...O contact is generally stronger than the I...N contact. Computational tools such as MEP, QTAIM, and NCIPlot were employed to characterize the bifurcated halogen bonds in the cocrystals.

Summary: This paper reports the synthesis and X-ray characterization of two derivatives containing the four most abundant halogen atoms, aiming to study Ha···Ha halogen bonding interactions. The heavier halogen atoms exhibit anisotropy of electron density, leading to the formation of multiple Ha···Ha contacts in the solid state. The halogen bonding assemblies in both compounds were analyzed using various methods such as DFT calculations, MEP surfaces, QTAIM, NCIplot, and ELF.

Highly polar stacking interactions wrap inorganics in organics: lone-pair-π-hole interactions between the PdO4 core and electron-deficient arenes

Yury Torubaev et al.

Summary: The study revealed that cocrystallization of iodine(i)-based perfluoroarenes with palladium acetate cluster resulted in significant noncovalent interactions, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. In the structures, aromatic rings were coupled with the cluster through lone pair-pi-(Ar-F)-hole interactions, while iodine-containing arenes were engaged in halogen bonding with carboxylate O centers. The electron-rich PdO4 plane behaved as a nucleophile providing oxygen lone pairs, complementing the pi-acidic surface of the arenes in circular stacking.

The π-hole revisited

Peter Politzer et al.

Summary: It is found that within molecules, π-holes typically display positive electrostatic potentials and polarizing attractive forces with negative sites, resulting from low electronic density regions perpendicular to planar portions of molecular frameworks. Interaction energies of π-hole complexes can be well expressed in terms of regression relationships involving both electrostatics and polarization, exhibiting a range from weak to strong forces. Trend also shows gradual changes in intermolecular separations, van der Waals radii, and configurations of π-hole atoms, indicating a continuum of chemical interactions from weak to strong.
