The physiology and genetics behind fruiting efficiency: a promising spike trait to improve wheat yield potential

Nicole Pretini et al.

Summary: Fruiting efficiency (FE) is proposed as a promising spike trait to improve wheat yield potential, with recent advances in understanding its physiological and genetic basis. Estimations of heritability and genetic gains when measuring fruiting efficiency at maturity (FEm) as a selection criterion are summarized. Novel genes and quantitative trait loci for marker-assisted selection of fruiting efficiency and other spike fertility traits are also reviewed.

Using anthesis date as a covariate to accurately assessing type II resistance to Fusarium head blight in field-grown bread wheat

M. F. Franco et al.

Summary: The study developed an accurate methodology for assessing type II resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) in the field, demonstrating the impact of anthesis date and environmental conditions on the performance of bread wheat lines, and showing that including the anthesis date factor can improve the accuracy of genetic type II resistance to FHB.

Increasing grain yield in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) by selection for high spike fertility index

Ana Clara Pontaroli et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that selecting for high Spike fertility index can increase grain yield in bread wheat, although it may lead to decreases in certain traits, trade-offs that can be avoided through concurrent selection.
