Detrimental effects of fructose on mitochondria in mouse motor neurons and on C. elegans healthspan

Divya Lodha et al.

Summary: High fructose adversely affects mitochondrial function in neuronal cells, including decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and disrupted mitochondrial respiration. In Caenorhabditis elegans, chronic intake of high fructose shortens lifespan, reduces movement and food intake, and causes mitochondrial swelling and disarray in muscle cells.

Sulforaphane and Vitamin E Protect From Glucotoxic Neurodegeneration and Lifespan Reduction In C. Elegans

Andrea Schlotterer et al.

Summary: Caenorhabditis elegans is a model organism in neurodegeneration and aging research. SFN and vitamin E have protective effects against glucotoxic damages to the neuronal system and lifespan in C. elegans by preventing the increase in ROS, AGEs, and preserving neuronal structure and function. This highlights the potential therapeutic options of indirect and direct antioxidants in preventing glucotoxic pathologies.

Polysaccharides from Volvariella volvacea inhibit fat accumulation in C. elegans dependent on the aak-2/nhr-49-mediated pathway

Juan Bai et al.

Summary: Volvariella volvacea polysaccharide (VPS) regulates fat metabolism in Caenorhabditis elegans by predominantly inhibiting fat accumulation through the aak-2/nhr-49-mediated fatty acid synthesis pathway, and partially through the acs-2-mediated fatty acid oxidation pathway.

Physicochemical and geroprotective comparison of Nostoc sphaeroides polysaccharides across colony growth stages and with derived oligosaccharides

Guohuan Zhong et al.

Summary: This study revealed distinct physicochemical and biofunctional properties of N. sphaeroides polysaccharides during colony growth stages, with a significant decrease in high/low molecular weight ratio. Both polysaccharides and oligosaccharides demonstrated antioxidant activities, while only oligosaccharides showed neuroprotective effects, suggesting their potential as novel geroprotectors. Additionally, oligosaccharides were found to upregulate stress and proteostasis-associated genes in C. elegans.

C. elegans discriminates colors to guide foraging

D. Dipon Ghosh et al.

Summary: Despite lacking eyes and opsins, Caenorhabditis elegans roundworms can still discriminate colors and make foraging decisions based on them, specifically avoiding harmful bacteria with blue-pigment toxin. The color specificity of color-dependent foraging varies significantly among wild strains, highlighting the ecological importance of color discrimination. Additionally, two evolutionarily conserved cellular stress response genes have been identified as necessary for opsin-independent, color-dependent foraging, suggesting that cellular stress response pathways may play a role in mediating spectral discrimination even in organisms without opsins.

Liquid-culture protocols for synchronous starvation, growth, dauer formation, and dietary restriction of Caenorhabditis elegans

Summary: The standard laboratory culture of Caenorhabditis elegans uses solid growth media with a bacterial food source, which limits control of food availability and worm population density. This study presents liquid-culture protocols for precisely modulating bacterial food availability and population density, allowing for reliable production of different types of worms. The protocols can be used for growing worms in small quantities for standard assays or in large quantities for other applications.
