Charpy impact anisotropy and the associated mechanisms in a hot-rolled Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy plate

Junqiang Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, strong anisotropic variations in impact absorption energies of a hot-rolled Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy plate with different sampling and notching directions were observed. The higher crack propagation energy of the RD-ND sample resulted in significantly larger impact absorption energy compared to other samples. Analysis revealed that the higher absorption energy of the RD-ND sample was attributed to the activities of prismatic slips and the resistance created by grain boundaries against crack propagation. The coupling effect of crystallographic texture and microstructural characteristics on the impact deformation mechanisms of the alloy was also described.

Corrosion behaviour of a wrought Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy in artificial seawater with various fluoride concentrations and pH values

Baoxian Su et al.

Summary: In this study, the corrosion behavior of a wrought Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo (Ti80) alloy in artificial seawater with different F- concentrations and pH values was systematically investigated. The results showed that increasing the F- concentration and reducing the pH value deteriorated the corrosion performance of the Ti80 alloy. The F- concentration mainly affected the anodic process, while the increase in pH played a significant role in inhibiting both cathodic and anodic processes. Surface characterizations revealed the preferential dissolution of the equiaxed alpha phase compared to the intergranular beta phase.

Effect of temperature and dissolved oxygen on the passivation behavior of Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy in artificial seawater

Xiaoqi Li et al.

Summary: The effects of temperature and dissolved oxygen on the passivation behavior of Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy in artificial seawater were investigated. It was found that increasing the temperature resulted in higher anodic and cathodic current density, as well as increased field strength and activation energy for oxygen vacancy motion. Decreasing the dissolved oxygen concentration inhibited the transformation of titanium oxide, leading to the disappearance of the anodic peak. Additionally, the passive current density increased in a deaerated environment due to the higher point defect density and diffusion rate.

Tuning microstructure and enhancing corrosion property of Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy through electron beam surface melting

Baoxian Su et al.

Summary: In this study, Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloys were processed using electron beam surface melting (EBSM) technology, and their microstructure and corrosion performance were compared with wrought counterparts. The results show that the EBSM sample exhibits better corrosion resistance due to the formation of a relatively more stable passive film induced by a higher fraction of phase boundaries in the fine alpha '-phase, and the alleviated heterogeneous distribution of compositions between alpha (alpha ')- and beta-phases resulting from rapid cooling during the EBSM process, which further leads to the absence of strong galvanic corrosion between different phases.

Understanding the effect of fluoride on corrosion behavior of pure titanium in different acids

Xiaoqi Li et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of pure titanium in different concentrations of F- in H2SO4, HCl and HNO3 was studied, with the threshold F- concentration triggering severe corrosion between 0.0005 and 0.001 M. The fluoride promotes anodic dissolution and inhibits oxygen reduction, resulting in a decrease of cathodic current density. The oxidizing nitrate in HNO3 accelerates corrosion and results in the most severe corrosion in fluoride-bearing HNO3.

Annealed microstructure dependent corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy

Baoxian Su et al.

Summary: Annealing at higher temperatures increases the corrosion resistance of Ti80 alloy by forming a higher volume fraction of beta phase, which is more resistant to corrosion than alpha phase due to higher content of Nb, Mo, and Zr. However, severe corrosion is observed in 5 M HCl solution due to the breakdown of oxide films and micro-galvanic couple effects. These findings provide insights for designing Ti alloys with high corrosion resistance through microstructural optimization.
