Ecomorphological divergence and trophic resource partitioning in 15 syntopic Indo-Pacific parrotfishes (Labridae: Scarini)

Georgina M. Nicholson et al.

Summary: The research shows that interspecific differences in cranial morphology among parrotfish species, such as Scarus and Chlorurus, reflect trophic partitioning in feeding substrata, indicating that these species achieve nutritional resource differentiation by utilizing different feeding substrata.

Mono- and multispecies biofilms from a crustose coralline alga induce settlement in the scleractinian coral Leptastrea purpurea

Lars-Erik Petersen et al.

Summary: This study isolated multiple microbial strains from a crustose coralline alga, with certain specific strains identified as capable of inducing settlement behavior in larvae of the brooding scleractinian coral. The findings suggest a potential role for bacteria in the settlement process of scleractinian corals, with specific bacterial species playing a significant role in inducing coral larvae settlement.

First insights into the impacts of benthic cyanobacterial mats on fish herbivory functions on a nearshore coral reef

Summary: This study examined a seasonal BCM bloom occurring in a 17-year-old no-take inshore reef area in Fiji. Results showed that BCMs covered 51% of the benthos, with significantly reduced fish herbivory on substrates dominated by BCMs. Seven different BCM-types were identified, most containing a complex consortium of cyanobacteria.

Underestimated cyanobacterial diversity: trends and perspectives of research in tropical environments

Petr Dvorak et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria play a crucial role in global ecosystems, yet many gaps still exist in our understanding of their distribution, dispersal, and biogeography. Recent research has uncovered previously undescribed biodiversity and changed our knowledge of their evolutionary relationships. Tropical cyanobacteria have been understudied, but are now receiving more attention for their potential impact on ecosystems.

Coral larval settlement preferences linked to crustose coralline algae with distinct chemical and microbial signatures

Hendrikje Jorissen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the settlement preferences of different CCA species for Acropora cytherea and found that a CCA species with a unique microbiome and metabolome significantly promoted the settlement of Acropora cytherea on its surface, with settlement preferences related to the source habitat of the CCA.

Fish predation on corals promotes the dispersal of coral symbionts

Carsten G. B. Grupstra et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the feces of coral-eating fish are hotspots for Symbiodiniaceae cells, with concentrations significantly higher than environmental reservoirs such as sediment and water. The community compositions of Symbiodiniaceae in the feces of coral-eating fish differ among obligate and facultative corallivores, grazer/detritivores, sediment, and water. It is estimated that some obligate coral-eating fish species release over 100 million Symbiodiniaceae cells per 100 m(2) of reef per day, potentially contributing to the dispersal of beneficial coral symbionts.
