Coordination polymers play a significant role in addressing global environmental issues through adsorptive remediation of contaminants. They have diverse mechanisms for binding and adsorbing contaminants, and can be utilized in various forms to provide solutions at different levels.
Above the permissible critical concentration of a contaminant present in air, water, and soil adversely affect human health. Industrial, agricultural, health-care and energy-related activities are regularly con-tributing to increase chemical, biological, or radiological environmental contaminants in our surround-ings to cause global concerns. The coordination polymers have prospects for adsorptive remediation of contamination by self or as composites through diverse compositions and functionalities to provide solu-tion for global environment issues dealing from microscopic level to bulk level. There are large numbers of mechanisms for binding and adsorbing contaminants by the coordination polymers, which makes a larger domain to study and also add up scopes to utilise them in different forms in remediation of con-taminants. Dimension, functional groups, active sites of porous coordination polymers contribute to the efficient adsorptions of contaminants in the presence or absence of stimuli. The roles of coordination polymers in generating new generation of composites, nanozymes, electrodes, membranes are discussed. Foundation for the adsorptive remedial processes by coordination polymers is presented. The necessity of bio-degradable environmentally benign coordination polymers in contaminant remediation is discussed.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
