3D-printed concrete with recycled glass: Effect of glass gradation on flexural strength and microstructure

Junli Liu et al.

Summary: Sustainable 3D concrete printing has gained attention recently, with one method being the replacement of natural river sand with recycled glass. This study focused on the flexural properties of 3D-printed concrete with different gradations of recycled glass, finding that glass addition can impact flexural strength and microstructural properties. The research showed that the location and morphology of pores related to the addition of glass particles influence crack propagation and ultimate strength.

Evaluating the effects of porosity on the mechanical properties of extrusion-based 3D printed concrete

Marchant van den Heever et al.

Summary: Elements fabricated by extrusion-based 3D concrete printing (3DCP) exhibit anisotropic mechanical properties, and the porosity has been found to affect the elasticity and compressive strength. This research quantitatively investigates the porosity metrics of a fibre-reinforced printable concrete (FRPC) mixture and finds that 3DCP samples have higher porosity and altered void attributes. Experimental findings show that the increase in porosity is associated with a decrease in elastic modulus and compressive capacity. The porosity is influenced by factors such as loading direction, stress concentrations, and deformability of the composite configuration.

Mechanical and shrinkage performance of 3D-printed rubberised engineered cementitious composites

Farhad Aslani et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the material behavior of rubberized engineered cementitious composites (ECC) using waste crumb rubber (CR) aggregates and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers manufactured through 3D concrete printing (3DCP). The study finds that adding PVA fibers and waste crumb rubber can improve the mechanical performance and shrinkage behavior of the concrete. Furthermore, compared to conventional mold casting, 3D printed elements show superior performance in terms of strength, ductility, flexural behavior, and shrinkage performance.

Fresh and anisotropic-mechanical properties of 3D printable ultra-high ductile concrete with crumb rubber

Junhong Ye et al.

Summary: A novel ultra-high ductile concrete (UHDC) modified with crumb rubber was developed for 3D concrete printing. Mechanical tests revealed that the printed UHDC had higher deformability and energy dissipation in certain directions compared to mold-cast UHDC. Additionally, minimal anisotropy was found in flexural strength, but significant anisotropy in flexural deformability, compressive strength and flexural energy dissipation capacity of the printed UHDC.

Fiber-reinforced mortar with 100% recycled fine aggregates: A cleaner perspective on 3D printing

Summary: The study evaluated the possibility of fully replacing NFA with RFA for 3DMP through DIC technique, mechanical testing, and microscopic analysis. The results showed that 100% replacement of RFA had limited impact on the failure pattern of 3DP specimens, while the addition of 1% PE fibers changed the failure pattern from brittle to ductile. After reinforcing with fibers, 3DP mortar mixed with 100% RFA exhibited higher mechanical properties and better deformation ability compared to fiber-free mortar with 100% NFA.

Characterization of air-void systems in 3D printed cementitious materials using optical image scanning and X-ray computed tomography

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Air voids play a dominant role in interlayer bond strength of 3D printed cementitious materials. The majority of air voids are evenly distributed within the 10-1000μm diameter range, displaying irregular and elongated shapes. Large air voids enclosed between printed filaments in the interface region contribute to relatively higher local porosity.
