Aliphatic chains grafted cellulose nanocrystals with core-corona structures for efficient toughening of PLA composites

Weidong Niu et al.

Summary: To enhance the toughness of polylactic acid (PLA), researchers prepared aliphatic chains-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (ECNCs) as nanofillers. By modifying cellulose nanocrystals with various chlorides, ECNCs with core-corona structures were obtained. Among them, octanoyl chloride-esterified ECNCs (EOCNCs) showed the most efficient enhancement of PLA toughness.

Progress in upcycling polylactic acid waste as an alternative carbon source: A review

Ce Sun et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA) is the highest produced bio-based plastic globally, used to replace petroleum-based plastics and reduce environmental pollution. However, the raw materials for PLA production mainly come from food, posing a threat to food security. Recycling PLA can reduce waste pollution and lower carbon emissions.

Honeycomb like CdS/sulphur-modified biochar composites with enhanced adsorption-photocatalytic capacity for effective removal of rhodamine B

Fuyan Kang et al.

Summary: The CdS/sulphur-modified biochar composites exhibit excellent adsorption-photocatalytic activity for efficient dye degradation. The superior performance is attributed to the large specific surface area, abundant reactive sites provided by the composite materials, and the promotion of migration and utilization of photoinduced carriers.

Preparation of effective ultraviolet shielding poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) degradable composite film using co-precipitation and hot-pressing method

Wenlong Li et al.

Summary: Biodegradable composite films of PLA and PBAT were prepared by a co-precipitation and hot-pressing method, showing improved mechanical properties and UV barrier properties upon the addition of 4%wt PBAT. The potential for UV screening packaging applications is high due to the excellent thermal stability and satisfactory mechanical properties of the composite films.

Preparation of super-toughened Poly(L-lactide) composites under elongational flow: A strategy for balancing stiffness and ductility

Zhi-Tao Yang et al.

Summary: A novel extrusion device, eccentric rotor extruder (ERE), was used to prepare high-performance PLA/PCL composites with elongational flow. SEM showed in-situ fiberization and improved interfacial adhesion of PLA/PCL, while DSC, 2D-SAXS, 2D-WAXD, and DMA were used to analyze compatibility and crystallization. Enhanced compatibility and crystallinity were confirmed to be induced by heterogeneous crystal nucleation on nano-fibrillated PCL phases and orientation of PLA, leading to significant improvement in elongation at break of PLA with a low loading of PCL.

Feasibility of Manufacturing Disposable Cups using PLA/PCL Composites Reinforced with Wood Powder

Wallisson Alves da Silva et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed PLA/PCL composites with wood powder as reinforcement, which showed higher impact strength and hardness suitable for manufacturing disposable cups. High concentrations of wood powder did not severely compromise the material properties, although losses were observed in elastic modulus and tensile strength.

Preparation and characterization of microcellular foamed thermoplastic polyamide elastomer composite consisting of EVA/TPAE1012

Guotao Huang et al.

Summary: Thermoplastic polyamide elastomer (TPAE) is a high-performance elastomer prepared from nylon hard segments and polyether or polyester soft segments, providing excellent mechanical properties and elasticity. In this study, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer/polyamide-1012 elastomer (EVA/TPAE1012) composite materials were prepared for foam production, resulting in low density, small cell size, and high cell density foams with improved specific strength, resilience, and toughness.

Fully biodegradable polylactide foams with ultrahigh expansion ratio and heat resistance for green packaging

Peng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, long chain branching (LCB) structures were efficiently introduced into polylactide (PLA) using sustainable soybean oil (SO), leading to improved foamability, heat resistance, and accelerated hydrolytic degradation. The addition of SO significantly increased the amount of LCB structures in PLA, resulting in enhanced melting strength and crystallization performance. Furthermore, PLA foam trays with light weight and good heat resistance were successfully developed, offering a green alternative to non-degradable oil-based plastics in disposable packaging products.

Thermo-Mechanical and Morphological Properties of Polymer Composites Reinforced by Natural Fibers Derived from Wet Blue Leather Wastes: A Comparative Study

Alessandro Nanni et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of wet blue leather wastes as natural reinforcing fibers in different polymer matrices, with poly(lactic acid) showing the best results and polyamide 12 and thermoplastic polyurethane also exhibiting positive behavior. However, thermoplastic elastomer-based samples performed poorly due to poor compatibility between hydrophilic fibers and the hydrophobic polymer matrix.
