The effect of moisture on the thermal property of a reed thatch roof during the UK heating season

Anthony Simpson

Summary: The hygrothermal performance of a replacement reed thatch roof with an insulation upgrade on Roadside cottage, a heated timber framed building in the UK, has been investigated. The study revealed the importance of moisture in a reed thatched roof and its relationship with rainfall and sunshine levels. Laboratory measurements showed the sensitivity of thermal conductivity of thatch to moisture. The results provided an evaluation of the thermal performance under complex environmental conditions. The study concluded that the insulation upgrade for the thatch roof met the modern insulation standards in the UK.

Mechanical, thermal and acoustical evaluation of biocomposites made of agricultural waste for ceiling tiles

Ruben Maderuelo-Sanz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of agricultural waste to create acoustic panels for ceiling tiles, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional building materials. The panels, made from materials such as rice husk, vine pruning residues, cork, and prickly pear, were bonded with a water-based acrylic resin. The mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties of the panels were tested and evaluated. The results showed a high sound absorption coefficient and acceptable flexural strength, making them suitable for use as suspended ceiling tiles. These biocomposites provide a sustainable solution compared to traditional synthetic and petroleum-based acoustic ceiling panels.

Characterization of Thermal Bio-Insulation Materials Based on Oil Palm Wood: The Effect of Hybridization and Particle Size

Indra Mawardi et al.

Summary: Oil palm wood, as a primary biomass waste, has been explored for its potential use in thermal insulation materials. Through incorporating hybridization and varying particle sizes, the study found that panels with coarse particles displayed superior thermal resistance and mechanical properties. This research demonstrates the promising potential of utilizing oil palm wood wastes for thermal insulation materials.
