Effect of Cyclic Loading Frequency on the Behavior of a Stabilized Sand Reinforced with Polypropylene and Sisal Fibers

Paulo J. Venda Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of a stabilized sandy soil under cyclic loading conditions. The inclusion of fibers decreases the accumulated permanent axial strain, especially at frequencies of 1.0-2.0 Hz and with the use of sisal fibers. The cyclic stage increases stiffness for all frequencies. The frequency has a low impact on the unconfined compressive strength of unreinforced material, but it affects the reinforced material.

Parameters Controlling Strength, Stiffness and Durability of a Fibre-Reinforced Clay

Abdullah Ekinci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of fibre-clay contact area in fibre-reinforced clay matrix. Different fibre types and contents were tested, and results showed that carbon fibre reinforcement achieved the highest compressive strength and shear modulus, while polypropylene fibre reinforcement had the highest strain energy at peak. The optimal fibre content for high-density samples was found to be 0.3%. It is suggested to reinforce the soil with 0.3% carbon fibre compacted at maximum dry density for field applications that require high strength and durability performance. A regression model was developed to predict the strength of fibre-reinforced clay based on density and fibre-clay contact area.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of recycled carpet fibre on the mechanical response of clean sand under monotonic loading and cyclic loading, as well as the post-liquefaction resistance of soil. Results indicate that adding carpet fibre enhances the shear modulus and ductility of clean sand, improving both liquefaction and post-liquefaction resistances.

Long-Term Tensile Behavior of a High-Strength Geotextile after Exposure to Recycled Construction and Demolition Materials

Fernanda Bessa Ferreira et al.

Summary: The use of recycled construction and demolition (C&D) materials as a sustainable alternative backfill in geosynthetic-reinforced structures has been found to reduce environmental impacts and natural resource depletion. In this study, creep rupture tests were conducted to assess the long-term tensile response of a high-strength geotextile typically used for soil reinforcement. The results showed that the short-term tensile strength of the geotextile can be significantly reduced after exposure to backfill materials. However, for long-term conditions, the exhumed specimens exhibited higher estimates of retained strength, suggesting that using fresh specimens for creep rupture testing is a safe approach for analyzing the long-term strength of this geosynthetic material. The study also confirmed the feasibility of using recycled C&D aggregates as a sustainable replacement for conventional backfill materials.

Shear strength of alluvial soils reinforced with PP fibers

Inci Develioglu et al.

Summary: Alluvial soils are sedimentary deposits with unfavorable properties such as high void ratios, low bearing capacity, and low shear strength. Various improvement methods like polypropylene fiber reinforcement can enhance the geotechnical properties of these soils. The study found that polypropylene fibers increase the internal friction angle and shear resistance of the soil, with density affecting the friction angle differently in natural and reinforced samples.

Shear strength behavior of clayey soil reinforced with polypropylene fibers under drained and undrained conditions

N. S. Correia et al.

Summary: The study showed that the fiber content had a greater influence on apparent cohesion than on the friction angle. In drained tests, the inclusion of fibers increased shear strength, while in undrained tests, shear strength was not affected by pore water pressure. Drainage had a significant impact on the improvement in peak shear strength of fiber-reinforced soils.

Behavior of discrete fiber-reinforced sandy soil in large-scale simple shear tests

D-S Xu et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of large-scale simple shear tests on sandy soil reinforced with different types of fibers. The addition of polypropylene and basalt fibers enhances the ultimate shear strength, while glass fiber has little contribution. Fiber inclusion hinders close packing and interlocking of soil particles, leading to increased volume contraction and slight improvement in shearing stiffness. The most significant increase in shear strength occurs at a shear strain exceeding 10%, allowing full interface interaction and mobilization of fiber tensile strength.

Summary: The experimental investigation showed that adding lime or cement at a certain fiber content significantly increased the strength properties of the soil, with cement having a better improvement effect than lime. Fiber-reinforced specimens with lime or cement treatment exhibited strain-softening behavior, with higher residual strength compared to untreated specimens. The stress and strain curve for specimens with higher fiber content was higher than those with lower fiber content, indicating a better improvement effect in engineering applications.

Liquefaction Potential and Effective Stress of Fiber-Reinforced Sand during Undrained Cyclic Loading

Xidong Zhang et al.

Summary: Adding fiber reinforcement to loose sand can alter the effective stress of the sand skeleton, reducing pore water pressure build-up and potentially delaying or preventing liquefaction. Results from cyclic triaxial tests show that the load carried by fibers can be separated from that carried by pore water and sand skeleton. The new pore pressure ratio provides insight into when liquefaction is likely to occur.
