Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Rate-Limiting Step for Macrocell Corrosion of Reinforcing Steel in Concrete

Zheng Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rate-limiting step(s) of macrocell corrosion of reinforcing steel bars in concrete by quantifying the contributions of anodic polarization, cathodic polarization, and ohmic subprocesses. The impact of various factors, such as the distance between active and passive steels and the active-to-passive steel area ratio, on the corrosion rate was studied through experiments and numerical simulations. Results show that the macrocell effect on the total corrosion rate of active steel is weakened with increasing microcell corrosion activity or relative humidity.

Failure mode-based calculation method for bending bearing capacities of normal cross-sections of corroded reinforced concrete beams

Chao Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper proposed a failure mode-based calculation method for predicting the bending bearing capacities of concrete beams with corroded reinforcement bars. The results showed that the proposed method had good predictive performance across the full range of corrosion ratios, enhancing performance assessment of existing RC structures and reliability analysis of new structures.

Evaluation of Nonuniform Corrosion of Steel in Concrete Based on Two-Yoke Magnetic Sensor

Jiahui Huang et al.

Summary: The present study aims to develop a two-yoke magnetic sensor system for measuring the mass loss of steel in concrete subjected to nonuniform corrosion. The effectiveness and accuracy of the sensor system were verified through experiments and theoretical calculations. It was found that the sensor system exhibited good accuracy in estimating the mass loss of nonuniformly corroding steel, regardless of different distributions of rust layer.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopic Analyses of the Influence of the Surface Nanocrystallization on the Passivation of Carbon Steel in the Pore Solution

H. Torbati-Sarraf et al.

Summary: This research applied different models to analyze electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in order to study the influence of grain refinement and straining on the passivation of carbon steel in an alkaline solution. The results showed that the oxide layer formed on a more strained and grain refined surface was thinner but less porous.
