Enhanced bone formation in locally-optimised, low-stiffness additive manufactured titanium implants: An in silico and in vivo tibial advancement study

Josephine M. Shum et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to investigate implant performance in an uneven loading environment using a tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) procedure for treating lameness in canines. The researchers developed a finite element model of the sheep stifle and used additive manufacturing to print different low-stiffness Ti-6Al-4V TTA implants. The results showed that optimised low-modulus implants had better bone ingrowth and contact compared to homogeneous designs, indicating the potential for improved osseointegration with rational design.

Techniques for mitigating the checkerboard formation: application in bone remodeling simulations

Jose Eduardo Gubaua et al.

Summary: The checkerboard phenomenon in bone remodeling simulations degrades results quality and has strong mesh dependency. The node-based approach is commonly used but lacks stability, especially for long-time simulations. This study discusses techniques for mitigating the checkerboard formation and achieving bone characterization, with the application of nodal average technique and introduction of standard density variation parameter. Smoothing techniques help stabilize behavior and allow for physiological density distribution.

Bone remodeling following mandibular reconstruction using fibula free flap

Keke Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates bone remodelling responses to mandibulectomy by developing an algorithm that incorporates patient-specific longitudinal data. The study aims to simulate bone remodelling activity in the conjunction region with a fibula free flap reconstruction and compare the long-term outcomes of different fixation plate designs. The results show a decrease in overall bone density over time, except in the docking site where bone apposition occurs after a decrease in bone density. Different screw positioning does not significantly influence bone remodelling outcomes.

Bahram Jafari et al.

Summary: This comparative study simulated the bone remodeling outcome around titanium dental implants and compared it with novel implants composed of radial functionally graded materials (FGMs) and titanium implants with hydroxyapatite (HA) coating. The results showed that the FGM implants had the highest remodeling stimulus and bone density, confirming their superiority over the HA-coated models. The findings of this study were supported by clinical images and previous literature on bone density values.

BIOMECHANICAL EVALUATION OF MARGINAL BONE LOSS IN THE SURROUNDING BONE UNDER DIFFERENT LOADING: 3D FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS STUDY

Abdelhak Ouldyerou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of implant length, marginal bone loss levels, and loading magnitude on stress at the bone-implant interface. The results showed that increasing bone loss led to higher stresses and displacements in the bone tissue. Buccolingual loading generated higher stresses compared to axial loading, and excessive loading increased stresses in the bone tissue.

The effect of functionally graded materials on bone remodeling around osseointegrated trans-femoral prostheses

Armin Omidvar Ghaziani et al.

Summary: Osseointegrated trans-femoral fixations have been utilized as an alternative to conventional sockets, however, the dissimilarity in mechanical properties has led to issues in bone adaptation. This study proposes fixations made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) and reveals significant advantages over conventionally used Titanium fixtures. The direction of gradation in FGMs plays a crucial role in bone remodeling behavior, with radial FGMs with low-stiffness outer layers showing improved bone adaptation.
