Shape morphing mechanical metamaterials through reversible plasticity

Dohgyu Hwang et al.

Summary: This multifunctional shape-morphing material combines elastomeric kirigami with an unconventional reversible plasticity mechanism in metal alloys to rapidly morph flat sheets into complex, load-bearing shapes, with reversibility and self-healing through phase change. It overcomes trade-offs in deformability and load-bearing capacity, and eliminates power requirements to sustain reconfigured shapes.

A novel hybrid-honeycomb structure: Enhanced stiffness, tunable auxeticity and negative thermal expansion

Xiang-Long Peng et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid-honeycomb structure with enhanced stiffness is proposed, and its effective thermoelastic properties can be widely tunable by tailoring the microstructural geometry and the constituent materials. The structure can be designed to concurrently possess an enhanced stiffness and a high degree of auxeticity and negative thermal expansion by properly choosing the geometrical and material parameters.

Additively manufactured bi-material metamaterial to program a wide range of thermal expansion

Kai Wei et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated a bi-material diamond metamaterial using additive manufacturing, achieving the expected programmable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). By selecting different material layouts, a wide range of programmable CTEs were obtained, indicating enhanced programmability and laying the foundation for the further design of multilevel and hierarchical metamaterials.

Multi-functional cylindrical metastructures to simultaneously program both thermal expansion and Poisson's ratio

Kai Wei et al.

Summary: A series of multi-functional cylindrical metastructures have been devised to incorporate programmable CTE and PR simultaneously. By modulating the geometric parameters, the PR and CTE of the cylindrical metastructures can be simultaneously programmed to be wide ranges, enabling potential engineering applications where precise control of deformation induced by mechanical and thermal loads is needed.

Large programmable coefficient of thermal expansion in additively manufactured bi-material mechanical metamaterial

Kai Wei et al.

Summary: A bi-material metamaterial was constructed using a material extrusion process to fabricate a material with consistent CTE in various in-plane directions, with experimental results confirming identical CTE values. The programmable CTE values obtained were higher than those of basic polymers, expanding the range to [-77, +258] ppm/degrees C and providing a basis for engineering applications in additive manufacturing.

Designing Shape Morphing Behavior through Local Programming of Mechanical Metamaterials

Franziska Wenz et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the concept of shape morphing and different behaviors related to achieving a target shape, filling a shape, and shifting a bulge through a material. It is necessary to consider the gradient within the material, logical operations, as well as the implementation of a sinusoidal function and if-then-else statements in unit cells and global stiffness gradient.

Shape optimisation and buckling analysis of large strain zero Poisson's ratio fish-cells metamaterial for morphing structures

Ashutosh Jha et al.

Summary: This article investigates the potential of a large strain morphing skin based on a Zero Poisson's Ratio (ZPR) Fish-Cells metamaterial. A multi-objective genetic algorithm shape optimisation is performed to improve the ZPR characteristics of the Fish-Cells metamaterial, with detailed joint design study to obtain consistent ZPR behaviour over a maximum strain range. The study provides insight into the non-linear behavior of the Fish-Cells ZPR metamaterial and evaluates its performance as a candidate skin for a morphing aircraft wing.
