Large deflection of composite beams by finite elements with node-dependent kinematics

E. Carrera et al.

Summary: This paper proposes the use of the node-dependent kinematics concept for the geometric nonlinear analysis of composite one-dimensional structures. The use of the Carrera unified formulation allows for the writing of finite element nonlinear equilibrium and incremental equations in a compact and recursive form. The results show that finite element models with node-dependent kinematics behave as well as ones with highly refined kinematics, proving the effectiveness of this approach in dealing with warping and torsion phenomena.

Nonlinear and linearized vibration analysis of plates and shells subjected to compressive loading

R. Azzara et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical model for virtual Vibration Correlation Technique (VCT) to compute the buckling load, identify the variation of natural frequencies with increasing applied load, and verify experimental VCT results. The nonlinear approach is based on the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) and adopts the full Green-Lagrange strain tensor for far nonlinear regimes. The geometric nonlinear equations are solved using a total Lagrangian framework and a Newton-Raphson method. The proposed approach provides excellent correlation with experimental results and reliably predicts the buckling load and variation of natural frequencies in the nonlinear regime.

Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Validity of Thermal Frequency Responses of Laminated Advanced Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Hybrid Composite Panel

Pruthwiraj Sahu et al.

Summary: The thermal frequency responses of a hybrid laminated composite panel were theoretically computed and compared with experimental data for the first time using a finite element model. The structural model for the hybrid panel was derived using higher-order displacement polynomial functions and evaluated through isoparametric finite elements. The elastic properties of the composite, including thermal and physical parameters of the advanced fibers, were determined through experimentation and numerical simulations. The study also analyzed the influence of different design parameters on the hybrid composite panel.

Multiscale modeling of the effective thermal conductivity of 2D woven composites by mechanics of structure genome and neural networks

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: A data-driven multiscale modeling approach is developed to predict the effective thermal conductivity of 2D woven composites using the mechanics of structure genome (MSG). Neural network models trained with simulation data generated by the MSG model enable the prediction of thermal conductivity of different woven composites. The developed models provide an efficient and accurate method for thermal design and analysis of 2D woven composites.

Accurate Stress Analysis of Variable Angle Tow Shells by High-Order Equivalent-Single-Layer and Layer-Wise Finite Element Models

Alberto Racionero Sanchez-Majano et al.

Summary: Advances in composite structure manufacturing have led to the conception of new concepts for lightweight components, with mature technologies like Automatic Fibre Placement (AFP) being employed to enhance mechanical performance and reduce structural weight. This is particularly crucial in the aerospace field where weight savings are a key goal.
