Efficiently determining the R-curve and bridging traction-separation relation of mode I delamination in a simple way

Jinrui Ye et al.

Summary: The R-curve and bridging traction-separation relation are important for understanding large scale fibre bridging behavior during delamination growth process. This study proposes a simple semi-analytical method that requires only experimentally recorded load and displacement to determine these relationships. The method avoids the need for complex devices or visual measurements, providing a more efficient and reliable approach for characterizing delamination behavior.

Load-bearing capacity and failure mechanism of integrated fluted-core composite sandwich cylinders

Haiyang Yang et al.

Summary: Fluted-core sandwich composites offer great potential in lightweight engineering applications. This study designed and fabricated trapezoidal fluted-core sandwich composite cylinders made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics to improve deformation stability. The effects of circumferential cell number and wall thickness on bearing characteristics and failure mechanism were assessed. The results showed that increasing cell number and wall thickness could improve critical local buckling load and enhance specific buckling load.

A semi-analytical method for determining mode-II fracture toughness and bridging law of composite laminates

Yu Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, a semi-analytical method based on the Castigliano theorem and the point friction theory was successfully used to determine the mode-II fracture toughness and bridging law of composite laminates. The accuracy of the method was verified through experimental data, and the bridging law was integrated into a model for delamination growth simulation, showing good agreements with experimental results. This method is simple and efficient, avoiding problems of unstable crack growth and difficult observation.

Fracture toughness resistance curves for a delamination in CFRP MD laminate composites, Part I: Nearly mode II deformation

Mor Mega et al.

Summary: In this study, nearly mode II initiation and resistance energy release rate values were determined for two multi-directional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) material systems. Finite element analyses were conducted to calculate stress intensity factors and fracture toughness resistance curves. The results showed that the initiation energy release rate values were higher for the prepreg material compared to the wet-layup material.

Delamination in carbon fiber epoxy DCB laminates with different stacking sequences: R-curve behavior and bridging traction-separation relation

Yu Gong et al.

Summary: The effects of stacking sequence on the R-curve and traction-separation relation in unidirectional and multidirectional CFRP DCB laminates were systematically investigated, showing strong influence on fiber bridging length, steady-state fracture toughness, and maximum bridging stress. However, there was no clear relationship between these factors and the stacking sequence. The obtained traction-separation relations were successfully integrated into a tri-linear cohesive zone model and numerical results agreed well with test results, demonstrating applicability for delamination modeling in composite laminates with fiber bridging effects.

A combined stress/energy-based criterion for mixed-mode fracture of laminated composites considering fiber bridging micromechanics

M. M. Mirsayar

Summary: A combined stress/energy-based criterion has been developed to predict mixed mode I/II fracture behavior in laminated composites, taking into account the effect of fiber bridging toughening. The criterion shows a higher correlation in predicting experimental data, offers a simpler computational method compared to energy-based criteria, and considers the effect of absorbed energy from micromechanical fiber bridging in the solution.
