Preparation of Oral Core-Shell Zein Nanoparticles to Improve the Bioavailability of Glycyrrhizic Acid for the Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis

Anxin Wu et al.

Summary: This study developed oral colon-targeted adhesion core-shell nanoparticles using FA-Zein as the core and pectin as the shell to improve the bioavailability of glycyrrhizic acid and enhance its anti-inflammatory effects in specific parts of the intestine. The nanoparticles showed stability in the stomach and small intestine, and released GA in the colon with abundant flora. Targeting with folate-acid was confirmed in cell studies, and the NPs exhibited high adhesion on the colon in a mouse model of ulcerative colitis, reducing levels of MPO and TNF-alpha through decreasing macrophages and neutrophils.

Fabrication and characterization of Pickering emulsion gels stabilized by zein/pullulan complex colloidal particles

Qian Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, zein/pullulan complex particles (ZPPs) were formulated to fabricate Pickering emulsions. The addition of pullulan increased particle size, decreased zeta potential, and improved the resistance to gravitational separation of zein. ZPPs modified the hydrophobicity of zein and allowed for the preparation of stable Pickering emulsions with nearly neutral wettability at a specific mass ratio.

Enhancing the stability of zein/fucoidan composite nanoparticles with calcium ions for quercetin delivery

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, composite nanoparticles based on zein and fucoidan were prepared, and the effects of different calcium ion concentrations on the stability of the system loaded with quercetin were investigated. It was found that the addition of Ca2+ improved the release of active substances from the nanoparticles, especially at a concentration of 1.5 mM. This suggests potential applications for these composite nanosystems in delivering active substances.

Dachao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully used xanthan gum as a stabilizer to improve the stability of zein nanoparticles. The addition of xanthan gum led to the formation of spherical nanoparticles with small particle size and negative zeta potential, which remained stable under various pH, temperature, and salt conditions. Additionally, the composite nanoparticles showed improved encapsulation efficiency and sustained release, making them suitable for delivering bioactive compounds in food and pharmaceutical preparations.
