Bioresponsive nanotherapy for preventing dental caries by inhibiting multispecies cariogenic biofilms

Danfeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study developed a new treatment method for early childhood caries (ECC) by using bioresponsive nanoparticles loaded with chlorin e6, which significantly increased the penetration depth and retention of the photosensitizer in the cariogenic biofilms. This method not only killed bacteria in preformed biofilms but also inhibited multispecies biofilm formation, and showed promising results in in vivo models.

pH-Switchable Antimicrobial Supramolecular Hydrogels for Synergistically Eliminating Biofilm and Promoting Wound Healing

Huimin Chen et al.

Summary: This study develops pH-switchable antibacterial hydrogels based on self-assembled amphiphilic pentapeptides, which can eradicate biofilms and promote healing in infected wounds. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the hydrogels achieve antimicrobial effects through the release of pentapeptides and antibacterial oil. In vivo experiments show that the hydrogels can accelerate wound closure, reduce inflammation, and promote angiogenesis and collagen deposition.

pH-Responsive Hybrid Nanoparticles for Imaging Spatiotemporal pH Changes in Biofilm-Dentin Microenvironments

Guang-Rong Tan et al.

Summary: Engineering highly sensitive nanomaterials for monitoring spatiotemporal pH changes has broad applications in studying biological systems. However, current technology lacks the capability to accurately probe both micro-pH profiles in dentin tissues and acidogenic oral biofilms simultaneously. Developing a highly sensitive pH-responsive hybrid nanoparticle (pH-NP) allows for simulating and studying key cariogenic factors/steps.
