Effects of Asphaltene Concentration and Test Temperature on the Stability of Water-in-Model Waxy Crude Oil Emulsions

Yujiang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of test temperature and asphaltene concentration on the stability of water-in-waxy crude oil emulsions. The results indicate that dissolved-state wax facilitates the adsorption of asphaltenes and enhances the interfacial properties, while wax crystals form a network structure and immobilize water droplets, thus improving the stability of the emulsions.

Modeling of viscosity of unstable crude oil-water mixture by characterization of energy consumption and crude oil physical properties

Haijun Luo et al.

Summary: When oilfield development enters the middle and late stages, the crude oil-water mixture often has a high water cut and cannot form a stable emulsion. Traditional emulsion viscosity models are not suitable for this unstable mixture. It is important to understand the viscosity characteristics of the unstable crude oil-water mixture with high water cut (UCMH) for pipeline transportation. The apparent viscosities of UCMH for 16 crude oils were determined and it was found that the apparent viscosity decreased with increasing shear rate, water cut of mixture, and temperature. The apparent viscosity of UCMH was not dependent on the content of single surfactants but was closely related to the content of combinatorial surfactants.

Rheo-microscopy in situ synchronous measurement of shearing thinning behaviors of waxy crude oil

Jian Zhao et al.

Summary: This study conducted Rheo-microscopy synchronous measurement to investigate the shear thinning behaviors of waxy crude oil. Results showed that with the increase in shear rate, the number of wax crystals decreased, dispersion degree increased, and the alignment of wax crystals along the flow field became more pronounced. The correlation between wax crystal behaviors and viscosity was strongest at specific temperatures, highlighting the importance of crystal dynamics on overall rheological properties.

Effects of waxes on hydrate behaviors in water-in-oil emulsions containing asphaltenes

Dongxu Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of waxes strengthened the inhibiting effect of asphaltenes on hydrate formation in asphaltene-containing water-in-oil emulsions. Wax crystals dispersed in the bulk phase and got adsorbed at water-oil interface through the synergistic effect with asphaltenes, inhibiting the dissociation of hydrates.

Role of Asphaltene in Stability of Water-in-Oil Model Emulsions: The Effects of Oil Composition and Size of the Aggregates and Droplets

Arian Velayati et al.

Summary: Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions are commonly handled in petroleum processes and are primarily stabilized by asphaltene-resin micelles. This study explores the effect of gilsonite on model W/O emulsions' stability, revealing the importance of aggregate size distribution in relation to emulsion droplet size. The observations contradict expectations, highlighting the complexity of factors influencing emulsion stability beyond asphaltene precipitation.

Two effects of wax crystals on stabilizing water-in-oil emulsions

Xinya Chen et al.

Summary: Research has shown that emulsifiers can promote the crystallization of paraffin wax at the interface, forming an elastic interfacial film that prevents water droplet coalescence. Wax crystals play a dominant role in the network forming process by preventing droplet coalescence.

Co-adsorption behavior of asphaltenes and carboxylic acids with different alkyl chain lengths and its effects on the stability of water/model oil emulsion

Daiwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that acids decrease the stability of emulsions stabilized by asphaltenes, leading to competitive adsorption between the two components and affecting the dispersive state of asphaltenes. The interactions between the components contribute to the formation of the interfacial layer, resulting in a more compressible but weaker asphaltene-containing interfacial layer with the participation of the acids.

Study on the Interactive Effects of Solid Particles and Asphaltenes on the Interfacial Structure and Stability of a Water-in-Model Oil Emulsion

Daiwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactive mechanism between asphaltenes and solid particles in crude oil emulsions, revealing their different roles in influencing interfacial strength, emulsion stability, and wettability modification. The adsorption of asphaltenes on particles leads to varying wettability modification and barrier effects at the interface.
