SiO2 based nanocomposite for simultaneous magnetic removal and discrimination of small pollutants in water

Simona Bettini et al.

Summary: A nanocomposite adsorbent material was synthesized to efficiently remove aromatic analytes dissolved in water through chemical adsorption. The nanocomposite consists of a magnetic iron oxide core coated with SiO2 and can achieve a removal efficiency of up to 93% for certain pollutants. Additionally, the material was decorated with plasmonic Ag nanoparticles to enhance surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals for further pollutant discrimination.

Heavy metal contamination status in Greek surface waters: A review with application and evaluation of pollution indices

Ioannis Karaouzas et al.

Summary: The overall heavy metal contamination status of surface water bodies in Greece generally meets environmental quality standards, but sediment heavy metal concentrations often exceed guidelines. A few rivers and lakes are moderately to highly contaminated by heavy metals.

Planning for the health impacts of climate change: Flooding, private groundwater contamination and waterborne infection - A cross-sectional study of risk perception, experience and behaviours in the Republic of Ireland

Arianna Musacchio et al.

Summary: The study in Ireland found that private well users have limited capacity to cope with flood-triggered contamination risks and adopt proactive attitudes. There is a general lack of preparedness to deal with flood-related contamination risks, with many respondents failing to adopt protective actions, especially rural non-agricultural residents. Perception of risk, personal norms, and social norms are important predictors of protective behaviour adoption and should be considered in future awareness campaigns.

Recent developments in layer-by-layer assembled systems application in water purification

Claudiu-Augustin Ghiorghita et al.

Summary: Electrostatically-based layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a versatile surface functionalization technique that allows the construction of complex three-dimensional architectures on various materials, with promising applications in water purification. The main strategies in this field include enhancing the barrier properties of separation membranes and constructing core-shell organic/inorganic sorbents. Recent achievements and studies on the economic aspects of using LbL assemblies for water purification suggest possible development of economically-viable materials for this application in the future.

Layer-by-layer assembly of nanofilms from colloidally stable amine-functionalized silica nanoparticles

Melike Barak et al.

Summary: This study focused on the assembly of uniform thin films with functional silica nanoparticles (FSNPs) using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. Monodisperse silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesized by the reverse microemulsion method and then functionalized with amino silane coupling agents. The LbL assembled thin film coatings were characterized by various methods to analyze their roughness, topography, and surface features. The AHAPS-FSNPs showed superior colloidal stability and mechanical properties compared to other FSNPs due to their secondary amines creating steric hindrance and crosslinking ability.
