Reconstructable Gradient Structures and Reprogrammable 3D Deformations of Hydrogels with Coumarin Units as the Photolabile Crosslinks

Chao Nan Zhu et al.

Summary: A hydrogel with reversible photo-crosslinks has been developed, allowing for the reprogramming of gradient structures and 3D deformations into various configurations. The hydrogel is fabricated by micellar polymerization of hydrophobic coumarin monomer and hydrophilic acrylic acid, with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles enhancing local concentration of coumarin units and improving mechanical properties by forming polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexes. High-efficiency photodimerization and photocleavage reactions of coumarins enable reversible tuning of the network structure of the hydrogel, which can be patterned with different gradient structures through photolithography for versatile functionalities.

The shear stability mechanism of cyclodextrin polymer and amphiphilic polymer inclusion gels

Bobo Zhou et al.

Summary: The study introduces CADC inclusion gel, which improves the shear stability of the gel by reorganizing amphiphilic polymer with cyclodextrin structure. The inclusion gel solves the issue of poor shear resistance ability of amphiphilic polymer gel and has the potential to replace it for water shutoff applications in oilfield.

An Advanced Material with Synergistic Viscoelasticity Enhancement of Hydrophobically Associated Water-Soluble Polymer and Surfactant

Tongyu Wang et al.

Summary: By adding surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to a hydrophobically associated water-soluble polymer solution, a composite with high viscoelasticity, strong shear thinning behavior, and good salt tolerance can be prepared. The viscosity of the composite reaches the maximum when the mass ratio of polymer to surfactant is 15:1, increasing hundredfold.

Dynamics and extensional rheology of polymer-surfactant association complexes

Carina D. V. Martinez Narvaez et al.

Summary: Understanding the influence of polymers and surfactants on rheology, application, and processing is critical for designing complex fluid formulations for various industries. The extensional rheology response of polymer-surfactant mixtures remains relatively poorly understood, while the response to strong extensional flows impacts drop formation and processing operations.

Tough and fluorescent hydrogels composed of poly(hydroxyurethane) and poly(stearyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) with hydrophobic associations and hydrogen bonds as the physical crosslinks

Ye Tian et al.

Summary: A fluorescent composite hydrogel with high toughness was prepared by solution casting ethanol solution of poly(hydroxyurethane) (PHU) and poly(stearyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) (P[SA-co-AAc]) followed by swelling in water. The hydrogel exhibited remarkable mechanical performances and strong fluorescence, making it suitable for applications in flexible electronics, information display, and biomedical devices.
