The 40-Hz auditory steady-state response in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis

Oskar Hougaard Jefsen et al.

Summary: This study explored the evidence of 40-Hz ASSR deficits in patients with bipolar disorder, and found consistent reductions in 40-Hz ASSR evoked power and inter-trial phase coherence compared with healthy controls. Further large-scale studies are needed to link 40-Hz ASSR deficits to clinical features and developmental trajectories.

Parvalbumin interneuron vulnerability and brain disorders

Jacob B. Ruden et al.

Summary: PV-INs, as parvalbumin-expressing interneurons, are highly vulnerable to stressors and implicated in various neuro-psychiatric diseases. Factors contributing to their vulnerability include substantial energy requirements, strong excitatory drive, and a unique developmental trajectory. Understanding and addressing these stressors is essential for developing therapies to protect PV-INs and maintain critical brain functions.

The Auditory Steady-State Response: Electrophysiological Index for Sensory Processing Dysfunction in Psychiatric Disorders

Shunsuke Sugiyama et al.

Summary: Sensory processing deficits are present in several psychiatric disorders, with ASSR abnormalities observed in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder. The ASSR amplitude is suppressed within the gamma band among these patients, showing an imbalance between GABAergic and NMDA receptor-mediated neurotransmission. Commonalities in ASSR deficits at gamma frequencies suggest shared pathophysiological mechanisms across these disorders.

40-Hz Auditory Steady-State Responses Characterize Circuit Dysfunctions and Predict Clinical Outcomes in Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis Participants: A Magnetoencephalography Study

Tineke Grent-'t-Jong et al.

Summary: This study found deficits in 40-Hz auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) in participants at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and patients with first-episode psychosis, especially in the right thalamus and hippocampus. The impairments in 40-Hz ASSRs were more pronounced in CHR-P participants who later transitioned to psychosis or showed persistent attenuated psychotic symptoms (APSs).
