The Molecular Basis and Pathophysiology of Trigeminal Neuralgia

QiLiang Chen et al.

Summary: This article reviews the latest findings on the pathophysiology of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and examines them in relation to current surgical and pharmacologic management for TN patients. Understanding the underlying biology of TN could help scientists and clinicians identify novel treatment targets and improve current treatment methods.

Factors Related to Hemifacial Spasm Recurrence in Patients Undergoing Microvascular Decompression-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Grazia Menna et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the literature and conducted a meta-analysis to identify factors associated with the recurrence of HFS after initially successful MVD surgery. The findings suggest that the persistence of lateral spread response (LSR) after surgery is significantly associated with an increased risk of HFS recurrence, while a shorter disease duration before surgery is associated with a lower risk of recurrence. Other examined factors did not show a significant association with recurrence risk. These results highlight the importance of short-term symptom duration and LSR persistence as prognostic factors for HFS recurrence after MVD surgery.

Summary: The study found that neurovascular compression resulting in deformity of the susceptible portion of the facial nerve is highly associated with the symptomatic side in hemifacial spasm.

Role of neuroimaging in cases of primary and secondary hemifacial spasm

Prabrisha Banerjee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the role of neuroimaging in primary and secondary hemifacial spasm, finding that the condition occurs mostly in the fifth decade of life, with primary HFS being more prevalent than secondary HFS. Clinical distinction between the two types is difficult, making neuroimaging essential for detecting conflicting vasculature and underlying pathologies.
