Triggering the energy release in molecular solar thermal systems: Norbornadiene-functionalized trioxatriangulen on Au(111)

Roman Eschenbacher et al.

Summary: Molecular solar thermal systems (MOST) based on molecular photoswitches are a promising technology for smart solar energy management at small scale. In this study, we investigated the catalytically triggered energy release mechanism in the NBD/QC couple and found that Au catalyzes the energy release from QC with high efficiency. This mechanism provides a pathway for energy release without activation of CH bonds, enabling the design of catalytically triggered MOST devices with high cyclability.

Electrochemically Triggered Energy Release from an Azothiophene-Based Molecular Solar Thermal System

Evanie Franz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electrochemically triggered energy release from an azothiophene-based MOST system and found that back-conversion was possible through the electron-catalyzed reaction channel. The MOST system was shown to withstand 100 conversion cycles without detectable decomposition of the photoswitch.

Molecular Solar Thermal Batteries through Combination of Magnetic Nanoparticle Catalysts and Tailored Norbornadiene Photoswitches

Patrick Lorenz et al.

Summary: Cobalt catalysts immobilized on iron oxide nanoparticles surface enhance the efficiency of energy release in norbornadiene-based photoswitches. The intrinsic magnetic properties of the material enable easy separation of iron oxide nanoparticles for efficient energy storage and release. Transition from cobalt (II) salphen to cobalt porphyrins significantly increases catalytic efficiency, absorption properties, and thermal stability of the system.
