Richa Tomer et al.

Summary: In this study, the dehydration of glucose for high-purity production and separation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was conducted. A new sulfated-ZnO catalyst with improved activity and selectivity was developed. The research also highlighted the significance of acidity and the B/L ratio in the catalyst's performance. Additionally, the separation and recycling of the catalyst and a liquid-liquid extraction process were explored.

Conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in an H2O/tetrahydrofuran/cyclohexane biphasic system with Al-2(SO4)(3) as the catalyst

Ning Shi et al.

Summary: A simple and efficient biphasic system was used to convert cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase, concentration of Al-2(SO4)(3) in the aqueous phase, and concentration of Al-2(SO4)(3) in the organic phase played critical roles in the conversion of cellulose into HMF. The addition of cyclohexane (CHX) improved the stability of HMF in the reaction system. Under optimized conditions, a high HMF yield of 71.2% was obtained in the H2O-THF-CHX biphasic system.

One-Pot Conversion of Glucose into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural using MOFs and Bronsted-Acid Tandem Catalysts

Marta Lara-Serrano et al.

Summary: The direct conversion of glucose to HMF was studied using MOF as catalysts and POM as a co-catalyst. Two routes were investigated and it was found that the reactions with MIL-53(Al) and MIL-101(Cr) catalysts produced the highest yield of HMF. Stability tests on the POM@MOF catalysts showed that MIL-53(Al) and Hsiw@ MIL-101(Cr) can be reused but with a progressive loss in HMF yield.

Zhihao Yu et al.

Summary: This study presents a metal pre-chelating assisted assembly strategy to synthesize Ru@Shell-HCSs nanoreactors with preferred catalytic microenvironments for efficient hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural. The channel-embedding structure enhances the electron-deficient property of ultrafine ruthenium clusters, leading to an accelerated tandem hydrogenation progression for enhanced 2-methylfuran generation.

Conversion of Cellulose into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural in a Biphasic System Catalyzed by Aluminum Sulfate and Byproduct Characterization

Ning Shi et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the influence of catalyst type, organic solvent type and ratio, and other factors on the conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The highest HMF yield was obtained when using the H2O-THF-Al-2(SO4)(3) biphasic system. Further investigation revealed that the excellent performance of this system was due to its high surface area, high concentration, and low solubility. Additionally, the presence of initial polymers was detected using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
