Helium Nanodroplet Infrared Action Spectroscopy of the Proton-Bound Dimer of Hydrogen Sulfate and Formate: Examining Nuclear Quantum Effects

Daniel A. Thomas et al.

Summary: The proton-bound dimer of hydrogen sulfate and formate serves as a representative structure for ionic hydrogen-bonding complexes relevant to biogenic aerosol nucleation. The potential energy surface for proton translocation in this complex is characterized by a shallow surface with two local minima, causing complications in structural assignment due to nuclear quantum effects. Utilizing IR action spectroscopy, the study reveals a shared proton structure in which further experiments or advanced theoretical treatments are needed to clarify the extent of proton displacement.

Photofragmentation and electron detachment of aromatic phosphonate, sulfonate and phosphate oxyanions

Jennifer A. Noble et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photodetachment energy threshold, as well as vibrationally resolved spectral signatures of model aromatic phosphonate, sulfonate and phosphate oxyanions using a photofragmentation spectrometer equipped with a cold ion trap. The anions showed different behaviors at different energy levels, with some exhibiting ionic fragmentation processes and others only dipole bound states.

Loss of CO2 from Monodeprotonated Phthalic Acid upon Photodissociation and Dissociative Electron Detachment

Ernesto Marceca et al.

Summary: The decarboxylation mechanism of cold monodeprotonated phthalic acid was studied, revealing different fragmentation pathways in the deprotonated anion and in the radical generated upon electron photodetachment. Unlike other aryl carboxylic acids, a double loss of CO2 molecules takes place in the phthalic monoanion, with a statistical distribution of product translational energies at higher excitation energies.
