A contribution of molecular modeling to supramolecular structures in soil organic matter#

Martin Hubert Gerzabek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stabilizing mechanisms of soil organic matter (SOM) and its interactions with soil mineral surfaces using molecular modeling. The results show that hydrogen bonds and cation bridges are the main stabilizing factors in the soil solution, with pH affecting the stability. Furthermore, the study finds that SOM aggregates can partially disintegrate into individual molecules and/or smaller subaggregates when interacting with reactive mineral soil constituents. Therefore, the stability of SOM depends on its interacting environment.

Pathways of biogenically excreted organic matter into soil aggregates

Tom Guhra et al.

Summary: Soil organisms play important roles as ecosystem engineers in promoting soil aggregation, enhancing soil quality, and nutrient cycling. The complex composition of biogenically excreted organic matter can either promote or inhibit aggregation, affecting aggregate formation, stability, and transport through various functional roles.

Ferrihydrite-organo composites are a suitable analog for predicting Cd(II)- As(V) coexistence behaviors at the soil solid-liquid interfaces*

Huihui Du et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that the coadsorption behavior of Cd-As on organomineral composites differs from that on pure minerals, and the presence of organics significantly affects the speciation and distribution of metals (loids). Organomineral composites are a more suitable analog than pure mineral phases to predict the mobility and fate of Cd-As in natural environments.

Soil organic matter stabilization at molecular scale: The role of metal cations and hydrogen bonds

Edgar Galicia-Andres et al.

Summary: Soil organic matter is composed of molecular species that can assemble into high-weight macromolecular species or collections of low-weight molecular species under different conditions. Metal cations play a key role in the formation of organic matter aggregates, promoting the formation of larger molecular size aggregates. The absence of cations can lead to the destabilization of organic matter and potential dispersion of its components.

Hydroxylamine and the nitrogen cycle: A review

Aina Soler-Jofra et al.

Summary: Aerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria have been identified more than 100 years ago, with hydroxylamine being known as an intermediate. Recent enzymatic evidence suggests that hydroxylamine is converted to NO and further to nitrite by an unknown enzyme. The nitrogen losses in the form of NO and N2O from three types of aerobic ammonium oxidizing microorganisms, as well as the inhibitory role of hydroxylamine on nitrite oxidizing bacteria, are still under investigation.

Iron oxide nanoparticles ameliorated the cadmium and salinity stresses in wheat plants, facilitating photosynthetic pigments and restricting cadmium uptake

Natasha Manzoor et al.

Summary: Iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized from a bacterial strain can stimulate wheat plant growth in saline soil, alleviate abiotic stresses, and enhance nutrient concentrations in the soil while reducing harmful components in wheat grains. The application of FeO-NPs in Cd-polluted soil also reduces the uptake of Cd by wheat plants, making it a potential agricultural strategy for mitigating Cd and salt stresses.

Sorption Mechanisms of Chemicals in Soils

Daniel G. Strawn

Summary: The sorption of chemicals onto soil particle surfaces is a critical process that affects their availability for uptake by organisms and loss into ground and surface waters. Factors influencing sorption behavior include soil mineral and organic matter properties, as well as the characteristics of the sorbing chemicals. Advancements in analytical methods have enabled direct determination of sorption mechanisms despite the complexity of soils.
