Bioaccumulation and function analysis of glutathione S-transferase isoforms in Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum exposed to different kinds of PAHs

Yueyao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the function of different glutathione S-transferase (GST) isoforms and detoxification metabolism responses in Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, exposed to 4 kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) single, and their mixtures for 15 days under laboratory conditions. The mRNA expression levels of different genes in the digestive glands of clams were detected, and the bioaccumulation of PAHs in tissues was also studied. The results provided valuable information for the risk assessment of PAHs exposure.

Oyster Crassostrea gigas, a good model for correlating viral and chemical contamination in the marine environment

Filomena Fiorito et al.

Summary: The study indicates the oyster Crassostrea gigas can be used as a model for correlating pollutants and foodborne viruses, with significant correlations observed between various chemical concentrations and the presence of viruses. This suggests that the co-presence of pollutants and viruses may pose an additional food safety risk.

Integrated biomarker responses in oysters Crassostrea gasar as an approach for assessing aquatic pollution of a Brazilian estuary

Clarissa P. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The study revealed that anthropogenic activities have significant impacts on the Laguna Estuarine System (LES) in southern Brazil, leading to changes in metal and organic contaminant concentrations, which in turn result in downregulation of biotransformation gene expression and decreased antioxidant enzyme activity. The findings highlight the detrimental effects of increasing pollutant loads on the aquatic ecosystem.

The toxic impacts of microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on haematic parameters in a marine bivalve species and their potential mechanisms of action

Shuge Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that both MPs and PAHs in the marine ecosystem may have adverse effects on the haematic parameters of blood clams, including decreased total haemocyte count, changes in haematic composition, and inhibition of haemocyte phagocytosis. Exposure to MPs and PAHs may lead to toxic impacts on haematic parameters by increasing intracellular ROS contents, causing LPO and DNA damage, reducing haemocyte viability, and disrupting important molecular signaling pathways. Moreover, coexposure to MPs and PAHs resulted in more severe adverse impacts on all parameters, indicating a significant synergistic effect.

Effects of oxidation defense system exposure to Benzo(a)pyrene on CYP450 gene expression and EROD activity in Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus coruscus

Lei Li et al.

Summary: BaP is commonly used in studies as a reference compound for assessing the toxicity of PAHs. This study found that CYP450 gene expression level and EROD activity increased significantly with higher BaP exposure concentrations. The significant correlations between BaP uptake and these biomarkers suggest their suitability for comprehensive studies on PAH exposure levels. There were also significant differences in antioxidant defense parameters among different treatment groups.
