Quantification of soil element changes in long-term agriculture: A case study in Northeast China

Tianpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic agricultural activities can affect the correlation of different elements in cropland soil, with distribution more even in undisturbed natural soil. Some elements are absorbed by plants and participate in the plant physiological cycle, while others may be lost during tilling. Careful management of micronutrient fertilizers is necessary to mitigate elemental pollution and maintain soil health.

Toxic element contents and associated multi-medium health risk assessment in an area under continuous agricultural use

Meline Beglaryan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the soil-to-plant transfer of toxic elements in the Armavir region of Armenia and the associated health risks. The results showed that the levels of toxic elements in soil and plants were within the regulatory limits, with low transfer rates. There was no significant non-carcinogenic risk from single-element ingestion, but a low health risk was observed in multi-food and multi-soil ingestion.

Identification of spatial patterns, geochemical associations and assessment of origin-specific health risk of potentially toxic elements in soils of Armavir region, Armenia

Gevorg Tepanosyan et al.

Summary: The study focused on the soil potentially toxic elements (PTE) contents in the Armavir region of Armenia. Two clusters were identified, one with PTE of natural origin on volcanic rocks and one with PTE introduced by human activities on alluvial, deluvial, and proluvial sediments. The results indicated higher health risks for specific elements in each cluster.

Evaluating heavy metals contamination in soil and vegetables in the region of North India: Levels, transfer and potential human health risk analysis

Neha Gupta et al.

Summary: This study determined the accumulation of heavy metals in different vegetables in Jhansi, India, and identified a serious health hazard for human adults due to the consumption of these vegetables, with lead, cadmium, and manganese posing the highest risks. The study recommends continuous monitoring of soil, irrigation water, and vegetables to prevent excessive accumulation in the food chain.

Testing different methods of estimating edaphic inputs in moss biomonitoring

Pablo Giraldez et al.

Summary: In this study, three methods for moss biomonitoring were compared, revealing that while they yield relatively similar results, the interpretations are not equivalent and none of the methods provides a reliable estimate of soil contribution to moss element concentrations. Therefore, it is recommended to use moss for atmospheric biomonitoring only for elements like Cu, Zn, and Cd, for which soil contribution is low.

Source-specific ecological and health risks of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soils in Southern Yunnan Province and associated uncertainty analysis

Guanghui Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the source-specific ecological and human health risks of soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in Southern Yunnan Province. Through geochemical baseline values and positive matrix factorization (PMF), it identified significant accumulation of PTEs and quantified four main sources contributing to the pollution. Industrial activities were found to be the largest source impacting ecological risk, while agricultural activities were identified as major contributors to non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, with children showing higher health risks than adults. Industrial activities should be prioritized to control ecological risk, while agricultural activities should be targeted to reduce health risks.
