Total organic halogen in two drinking water supply systems: Occurrence, variations, and relationship with trihalomethanes

Jun-Ling Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that TOX in drinking water is mainly formed during chlorination disinfection, and there is a positive correlation between raw water DOC and an increase in TOX in treated water, as well as DOC level with TOX content in distributed water. TCM was the dominant THM in drinking water, and there was a weak correlation between THM2 levels and TOX content.

Aquatic toxicity and aquatic ecological risk assessment of wastewater-derived halogenated phenolic disinfection byproducts

Yaqian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute toxicity and potential ecological risk of wastewater-derived disinfection byproducts (DBPs) on Gobiocypris rarus. The results showed that the toxicity of phenolic DBPs varied depending on the compound and the environmental concentration. Some phenolic DBPs exhibited high ecological risk. Further research is needed to explore the potential harmful effects of these high-risk compounds and implement appropriate measures to mitigate their ecological risk.

Sugar Content and Sources in Commercial Infant Cereals in Spain

Liliana Garro-Mellado et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sugar content of 120 infant cereals in the Spanish market. The average total sugar content was 23g/100g, providing 24% of calories. Most cereals contained sucrose, and some also contained fruits. There were differences in sugar content between the tested methods and the label information.

Formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids from 2,6-dichloro-1,4--benzoquinone during chlorination: Decomposition kinetics, conversion rates, and pathways

Hongyan Zhai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the decomposition characteristics and transformation potential of 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ) as an intermediate disinfection byproduct (DBP) in water. The results showed that the decomposition of 2,6-DCBQ followed first-order kinetics, and no THMs and HAAs were generated during hydrolysis. However, during chlorination, 2,6-DCBQ rapidly decayed and formed THMs and HAAs.

Multi-exposure human health risks assessment of trihalomethanes in drinking water of Egypt

El-Sayed Mishaqa et al.

Summary: The study found that concentrations of trihalomethanes in Egyptian drinking water were within safe levels, with inhalation posing the greatest cancer risk. Bromodichloromethane had the highest impact on cancer risk. Overall, the assessment of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks showed that the vast majority of governorates had risk values below acceptable levels.

Occurrence and Distribution of Disinfection Byproducts in Domestic Wastewater Effluent, Tap Water, and Surface Water during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in China

Zhigang Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and distribution of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in domestic wastewater effluent, tap water, and surface water in China. Results showed that DBP concentrations were higher in wastewater effluents than tap water and surface water, with haloacetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) being the most dominant categories. Additionally, the study revealed that HAAs in wastewater effluents had higher risk quotient values for green algae.

Modeling and elucidation the effects of iron deposits on chlorine decay and trihalomethane formation in drinking water distribution system

Pei Hua et al.

Summary: Iron deposits affect chlorine consumption and THM formation in drinking water through various mechanisms, such as accelerating reactions of DOM with chlorine through catalysis and increasing chlorine demand through adsorption. The type of deposits and properties of DOM can influence the extent of these effects.

Roles and Knowledge Gaps of Point-of-Use Technologies for Mitigating Health Risks from Disinfection Byproducts in Tap Water: A Critical Review

Baiyang Chen et al.

Summary: Growing concerns over water pollution and affordability have led to a rapid acceptance and development of various point-of-use devices for domestic use. However, there is still a lack of systematic knowledge on the efficiency and mechanisms of POU technologies in removing regulated and emerging DBPs. Additional research is needed to address key knowledge gaps and improve public health protection.

Circular Sustainability of Sugarcane: Natural, Nutritious, and Functional Unrefined Sweeteners That Meet New Consumer Demands

Gillian Eggleston et al.

Summary: Sucrose has been under scrutiny in the past decade mainly due to its calories, although it remains one of the most widely used natural sweeteners. As consumers increasingly seek healthier and more natural food options, sucrose and less refined sugars from sugarcane are being recognized as natural sweeteners with greater nutritional value.
