Recent advances of cold plasma technology for water and soil remediation: A critical review

Christos A. Aggelopoulos

Summary: Cold plasma as a promising remediation method shows high environmental compatibility and energy efficiency, but still faces challenges in maximizing the production of reactive species, increasing the contact area between plasma and pollutants, and ensuring feasibility in real life conditions. Efforts have been made to develop different plasma remediation systems for optimal results, but critical factors and limitations still need to be addressed for effective industrial implementation.

Unravelling the pathways of air plasma induced aflatoxin B1 degradation and detoxification

Natasa Hojnik et al.

Summary: Aflatoxins, particularly AFB(1), are a major dietary risk factor for humans, with the WHO identifying it as a potent carcinogen. This study demonstrates an efficient targeted degradation of AFB(1) using non-equilibrium plasma, with detailed mechanisms elucidated through sensitive analytical methods. The approach not only renders AFB(1) harmless in a short amount of time, but also outperforms other non-thermal methods like UV irradiation.

A review on non-thermal plasma treatment of water contaminated with antibiotics

M. Magureanu et al.

Summary: Large amounts of antibiotics are being produced and consumed globally, leading to significant water contamination due to inefficient wastewater treatment. The high concentrations of antibiotics in the environment exert selective pressure on clinically important bacteria, increasing resistance prevalence. Efforts to improve contaminated wastewater treatment are essential in order to reduce uncontrollable spread of antibiotic resistance, as a drastic reduction in antibiotic use is not anticipated. This review paper analyzes recent progress on using non-thermal plasma technology to degrade antibiotics in water, discussing removal efficiency, energy efficiency, and degradation pathways for various classes of antibiotics. Ways to enhance the efficiency of the plasma process are also addressed.

Chlorine dioxide radicals triggered by chlorite under visible-light irradiation for enhanced degradation and detoxification of norfloxacin antibiotic: Radical mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Ruidian Su et al.

Summary: A novel combined chlorine dioxide (ClO2)-photocatalysis technique was developed by activating ClO2- using photoinduced ?OH radicals, leading to significantly enhanced degradation rate of norfloxacin (NOR). The durable active ClO2 ensured stability of the system against external interferences, and ClO2- played a key role in promoting electron-hole separation and protecting photocatalysts, resulting in outstanding stability in multiple cycle tests.
