Combined Use of Vis-NIR and XRF Sensors for Tropical Soil Fertility Analysis: Assessing Different Data Fusion Approaches

Summary: Visible and near infrared (vis-NIR) diffuse reflectance and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensors are effective tools for predicting soil key fertility attributes in Brazilian tropical soils. When combined, these sensors using various data fusion approaches showed improved accuracy in predicting soil attributes. The results demonstrate the complementarity of XRF and vis-NIR sensors in predicting soil fertility attributes, suggesting the need for further research on optimized data fusion methods.

New prospects to the multi-elemental analysis of single microcrystal of apatite by total-reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Summary: The study proposes a new method using TXRF for elemental analysis of single apatite microcrystals, which is faster, cheaper, and easier in quantification compared to LA-ICP-MS. By directly preparing the apatite microcrystal on a quartz carrier using nitric acid digestion and using the stoichiometric value of phosphorus as an internal standard, major, minor, and trace elements can be obtained simultaneously. Raman spectroscopy is applied for information on mineral phases and their distribution, and the proposed TXRF method is validated by analyzing reference materials and comparing results with bulk apatite TXRF and LA-ICP-MS methods.

Comparison between energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectral data and elemental data for soil attributes modelling

Summary: This study compares the performance of partial least squares regression models for predicting soil fertility attributes using different EDXRF inputs, and finds that the type of EDXRF dataset used does not significantly interfere with fertility attribute prediction. However, peak intensity data lacks linearity and robustness in some models. The study also provides relevant protocols for analytical validation in soil fertility attribute prediction when using EDXRF data.

Quantification of Element Mass Concentrations in Ambient Aerosols by Combination of Cascade Impactor Sampling and Mobile Total Reflection X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Summary: The study successfully developed a tool for quantifying particle element compositions within short time intervals and even on-site by combining cascade impactor aerosol sampling with on-site total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The method showed good time and size resolution in observing aerosol chemistry changes, with a non-destructive elemental mass concentration measurement achieving a lower limit of detection around 10 pg/m(3). Results also demonstrated the traceability of field TXRF measurements to a radiometrically calibrated TXRF reference.

Summary: The boundaries of XRF analysis are continuously expanding, with advancements in nanoscale spatial resolution and high-speed imaging capabilities. 4th generation SR facilities like the ESRF Extremely Brilliant Source are at the forefront of these developments, and there is a trend of combining SR-XRF spectrometry with other X-ray techniques for enhanced spatial elemental information. The field is also seeing promising advances in full field microXRF spectrometry and the growth of portable XRF technology in various applications.

Three calibration techniques combined with sample-effective design of experiment based on Latin hypercube sampling for direct detection of lanthanides in REE-rich ores using TXRF and WDXRF

Summary: This study focused on detecting five rare-earth elements in ores and nodules using two X-ray fluorescence techniques. A specially designed calibration set based on Latin hypercube sampling addressed issues of high pair-wise correlation between REE contents and significant overlapping of REE lines. Univariate and multivariate calibration models were used to quantitatively determine the content of Ce, La, and Nd, with special cases of Pr and Sm requiring the use of multivariate models.
