A comprehensive review on carbon source effect of microalgae lipid accumulation for biofuel production

Xiangmeng Ma et al.

Summary: Energy is a driving force for economic development, and renewable and sustainable energy sources are important due to the scarcity of fossil fuels and environmental impact. Microalgae, as a primary feedstock for biodiesel, has high application potential, but lipid yield is constrained by high upstream costs. Modifying lipid-rich microalgae cells has been the focus to improve lipid content and productivity. Different carbon sources are assimilated by microalgae through various pathways, impacting biomass and lipid accumulation. This review discusses mechanisms of lipid synthesis, carbon uptake, and the effects of different carbon conditions on lipid accumulation in microalgae biomass and biodiesel production. Recent advances in large-scale commercialization of microalgae lipid cultivation and biodiesel production are highlighted, along with challenges and suggestions for cost-benefit concerns in large-scale production.

Carbon-negative and high-rate nutrient removal using mixotrophic microalgae

Muhammad Mubashar et al.

Summary: Mixotrophic microalgae have great potential for nutrient removal in wastewater, particularly when autotrophy and heterotrophy coexist. The study found that the N removal rate significantly increased in mixotrophic conditions compared to autotrophic and heterotrophic controls. Achieving a balanced ratio of autotrophy/heterotrophy can lead to high N removal rates and negative carbon budgets, making it a sustainable approach for wastewater treatment.

Yue Huang et al.

Summary: In aquatic environments, nitrogen and phosphorus are crucial nutrients for the growth of mixotrophic Chlorella vulgaris, with their concentration significantly affecting growth parameters and nutrient uptake. Particularly, at lower nutrient levels, the N-P ratio plays a more sensitive role in influencing the biochemical and elemental composition of the microalgae.

Enhancement of biodiesel yield and characteristics through in-situ solvo-thermal co-transesterification of wet microalgae with spent coffee grounds

Abd El-Fatah Abomohra et al.

Summary: This study evaluated in-situ co-transesterification of wet spent coffee ground (SCG)/microalgae mixture for enhanced biodiesel production. The optimum conditions for maximum biodiesel yield were found to be 198 degrees C, 6 mL solvent g(-1) biomass, and a reaction time of 132 min. Pure microalgae showed the highest biodiesel yield, while pure SCG showed the lowest yield.

Mechanistic insights into organic carbon-driven water blackening and odorization of urban rivers

Zhiwei Liang et al.

Summary: Rapid global urbanization is causing severe pollution of urban rivers through massive anthropogenic inputs of organic matter and inorganic nutrients, leading to changes in the structure and function of aquatic microbial communities. Organic carbon is identified as a key parameter driving water blackening and odorization, as well as the enrichment of emerging pathogens in urban river microbial communities. The study provides mechanistic insight into the phenomenon and raises questions about current remediation strategies for urban aquatic ecosystems.
