Profiling steroid and thyroid hormones with hair analysis in a cohort of women aged 25 to 45 years old

Feng-Jiao Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, a method for analyzing multiple endogenous hormones in human hair was developed and validated. The method allowed the detection of 32 hormones from different chemical classes and established complete reference intervals. Correlations between certain hormone concentrations in hair were found. This method is of significance for better identifying endocrine disorders.

Effects of acute exposure to microcystins on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA), -gonad (HPG) and -thyroid (HPT) axes of female rats

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: This study for the first time investigated the effects of exposure to MC-LR on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad, and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axes in rats. Exposure to MC-LR led to endocrine-disrupting effects, including alterations in hormone concentrations and gene transcription. Further studies are needed to explore the crosstalk among these three axes.

Hair versus urine for the biomonitoring of pesticide exposure: Results from a pilot cohort study on pregnant women

Emilie M. Hardy et al.

Summary: The study compared urine and hair samples from pregnant women to assess pesticide exposure. Results showed that hair analysis provided more comprehensive information than urine analysis, with a higher number and frequency of compounds detected in hair samples. The study supports the relevance of using hair analysis in future epidemiological studies on pesticide exposure and health effects.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and -thyroid axes activation lasting one year after an earthquake swarm: results from a big data analysis

G. Spaggiari et al.

Summary: The study found that cortisol levels increased significantly after the earthquake, while levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone did not show significant changes. The incidence of biochemical hypercortisolism increased after the earthquake, while thyroid-stimulating hormone levels decreased and free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine levels increased.
