Chloride-mediated electrochemical degradation of the venlafaxine antidepressant

Yuying Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of chloride-mediated electrochemical degradation to efficiently remove venlafaxine in aqueous media, which is a popular antidepressant and has become a rising issue in environmental aquatic media. The addition of chloride ions significantly increases the degradation rate of venlafaxine by selectively attacking the benzene ring and accelerating its opening. The study demonstrates the potential of chloride-mediated advanced oxidation technology for the degradation of venlafaxine and other emerging antidepressants containing a benzene ring, providing a new route for the removal of organic pollutants.

Intervention of antimicrobial peptide usage on antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture

Jian Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of antimicrobial peptide intervention on antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture by analyzing the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in various samples. The results showed that cecropin treatment significantly reduced the absolute abundance of ARGs, while antibiotic treatment had the opposite effect. Network analysis revealed that cecropin treatment could decrease the occurrence of multi-drug resistant bacteria and the correlation between genera and ARGs.

Metagenomic analysis on resistance genes in water and microplastics from a mariculture system

Jian Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) in water and microplastics of a mariculture pond using metagenomic analysis. The results showed that microplastics could enrich most of the MRGs and some ARGs, potentially serving as reservoirs for these pollutants.

Continental-scale spatial distribution, sources, and health risks of heavy metals in seafood: challenge for the water-food-energy nexus sustainability in coastal regions?

Jian Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that heavy metal concentrations in seafood were highest in bivalve molluscs and lowest in fish. Estimated daily intake analysis showed that consuming seafood was safe for humans at all sampling sites, but Cr and As in 72% of fish samples posed high cancer risks for children.

Effective mineralization of p-nitrophenol by catalytic ozonation using Ce-substituted La1-xCexFeO3 catalyst

Hongfei Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, cerium-doped lanthanum ferrite perovskite oxides were synthesized and used as ozone catalysts for p-nitrophenol mineralization. La0.8Ce0.2FeO3 showed the highest catalytic activity due to its higher surface area, richer lattice oxygen, surface -OH groups, and facilitated redox cycling of Ce3+/Ce4+ and Fe2+/Fe3+.

Degradation of ciprofloxacin by photocatalytic ozonation process under irradiation with UVA: Comparative study, performance and mechanism

Esrafil Asgari et al.

Summary: The study investigated the photocatalytic ozonation process for the removal of ciprofloxacin antibiotic from aqueous solutions. Various operational factors were studied, and the catalyst was characterized using multiple techniques. The results showed that the process was effective in removing pollutants and the catalyst retained about 95% efficiency after 6 recycling steps.

Synthesis of nano-FeS2 and its application as an effective activator of ozone and peroxydisulfate in the electrochemical process for ofloxacin degradation: A comparative study

Elham Aseman-Bashiz et al.

Summary: Nanopyrite particles (NP) were synthesized and used as a novel source of Fe2+ in the electro-activation of ozone and peroxydisulfate for ofloxacin removal. The results showed that the NP/PDS and NP/O-3 processes had good OFX removal efficiency, with a more significant synergistic effect observed in the NP/PDS system.
