Occurrence of toxic metals and their selective pressure for antibiotic-resistant clinically relevant bacteria and antibiotic-resistant genes in river receiving systems under tropical conditions

Dhafer Mohammed M. Al Salah et al.

Summary: The study found high abundances of ARB and ARGs in sediment samples from two suburban rivers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Metals correlated with grain size, organic matter content, and total copies of 16s rRNA, influencing the persistence of ARB and ARGs in sediments.

Heavy metal-induced selection and proliferation of antibiotic resistance: A review

Prakriti Vats et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global threat, driven not only by the improper use of antibiotics but also by the selection pressure from other antimicrobial agents like heavy metals. Heavy metal contamination contributes to the development of antibiotic and metal resistance through mechanisms such as co-resistance and cross-resistance. However, there is a scarcity of studies investigating the process of co-selection in clinical settings. Prospective strategies are needed to manage heavy metal-induced antibiotic resistance, including the search for specific inhibitors and the addition of alternative medicinal combinations to existing treatment options.

Microbial diversity alteration reveals biomarkers of contamination in soil-river-lake continuum

Zeina Bourhane et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of pollutants on microbial communities in the soil-water-sediment continuum of coastal areas using chemical and molecular approaches. Results revealed significant differences in microbial composition between seasons and compartments, with specific bacterial genera correlated with pollutant types. Additionally, PICRUSt analysis showed metabolic potential for pollutant transformation of specialist species, offering insights for ecosystem recovery estimation. Such findings suggest the potential for developing microbial indicators for assessing human activities' effects on aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of heavy metals pollution on the co-selection of metal and antibiotic resistance in urban rivers in UK and India*

Sonia Gupta et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between heavy metal pollution and antibiotic resistance in river systems. The results indicate that high metal concentrations promote the abundance of metal and antibiotic resistance genes and affect bacterial communities, leading to the development of multi-metal and multi-antibiotic resistance. Network analysis demonstrates the positive relationships between metal resistance genes and antibiotic resistance genes, as well as the potential role of integrons in the co transmission of these genes. The findings highlight the need to consider metal pollution in controlling antibiotic resistance transmission.

Evolution of the sources contribution of aliphatic hydrocarbons and their fate in Sepetiba Bay, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Angelo C. B. Carvalho et al.

Summary: The study assessed the evolution and fate of aliphatic hydrocarbon sources in Sepetiaba Bay sediments, revealing unpolluted sediments with a mixture of allochthonous and autochthonous sources. Further studies are needed to confirm an oil fingerprint between the internal sector and the harbor area.
