Occurrences and removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products from aquatic systems using advanced treatment- A review

A. K. Priya et al.

Summary: Synthetic and indigenous products contribute to micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care items, steroid hormones, and agrochemicals, which can harm living organisms even at low concentrations. Residual PPPs at dangerously high levels have been detected in the ecosystem, with residential sewage treatment plants being a major source. These pollutants have a longer lifespan in the environment due to their robust structure.

Effect of magnetization on the adsorptive removal of an emerging contaminant ciprofloxacin by magnetic acid activated carbon

Ajit Kumar et al.

Summary: The study prepared magnetic acid activated carbons from Sterculia villosa Roxb shells and characterized them before and after adsorption, confirming the formation of magnetic aggregates. Experimental data fit Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while thermodynamic analysis showed the adsorption process to be endothermic, spontaneous, and thermodynamically favorable.

Comparison of Cr(VI) adsorption and photocatalytic reduction efficiency using leonardite powder

Hudaverdi Arslan et al.

Summary: In this study, the removal of Cr(VI) from the aquatic environment using leonardite as an adsorbent and photocatalyst was investigated. The effects of solution pH, particle size, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration on the removal efficiency were studied. The results showed that leonardite achieved complete removal of Cr(VI) in both adsorption and photocatalytic processes, and the reuse of leonardite powder was also explored.

Catalytic efficiency of raw and hydrolyzed eggshell in the oxidation of crystal violet and dye bathing wastewater by thermally activated peroxide oxidation method

Erdal Yabalak et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrochar-based-eggshell was prepared and used as a catalyst in the thermally activated peroxide oxidation approach for crystal violet and dye bathing wastewater degradation. The catalytic activity of the hydrochar-based-eggshell was found to be higher than that of the raw eggshell. The study demonstrated the potential of hydrolyzed eggshells in the oxidation of crystal violet and dye bathing wastewater.

Natural fluorescence emission - an indirect measurement of applied ozone dosages to remove pharmaceuticals in biologically treated wastewater

Aikaterini Spiliotopoulou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using UV-absorbance and fluorescence as effective monitoring tools for ozone treatment processes in wastewater treatment plants. UV-absorbance can detect differences in ozone dosages as low as 1 mg/L, while fluorescence can be utilized for qualitative monitoring of pharmaceutical removal processes.

Use of Nanocellulose extracted from grass for adsorption abatement of Ciprofloxacin and Diclofenac removal with phyto, and fish toxicity studies

Tasrin Shahnaz et al.

Summary: The study focused on the adsorption of antibiotic Ciprofloxacin (CPXO) and anti-inflammatory agent Diclofenac (DCF) on Grass nanocellulose (GNC) extracted from Cyprus rotundas grass. Various experimental measures were optimized to study the adsorption process, and the maximum adsorption capacity of GNC for CPXO and DCF were determined. Phytotoxicity studies on plants and acute fish toxicity analysis on zebra fish were conducted to evaluate the effect of treated effluent on biological organisms.

A detailed insight on fabricated porous chitosan in eliminating synthetic anionic dyes from single and multi-adsorptive systems with related studies

Chandi Patra et al.

Summary: Chitosan was successfully fabricated as a potential adsorbent for anionic synthetic dyes, showing high adsorption capacity for Bromophenol blue, Direct blue 6, and Congo red. The adsorption process was found to be influenced by factors such as initial pH, dosage, temperature, and initial concentration of dye species. Competitive Langmuir isotherm model verified antagonistic behavior among different dyes in multi-adsorptive systems over the chitosan surface. The thermodynamics of the sorbate-sorbent interaction were favorable, with minimal interference from co-existing metal cations and anionic salts.

Karthik Velusamy et al.

Summary: The soapnut seeds biochar was synthesized using a tubular furnace under nitrogen gas environment to effectively remove pollutants and emerging contaminants like ciprofloxacin-500mg from wastewaters generated from pharmaceutical industries. Batch analysis revealed excellent adsorption performance at pH 6 and temperature 303 K with a dosage of 0.07 g, showing potential as a low-cost adsorbent for ciprofloxacin-500mg removal.

A. Annam Renita et al.

Summary: A study comparing electrolytic, adsorption, and hybrid methods for removing malachite green dye from water using Eucalyptus globulus seeds found that the hybrid method was most effective at 12 V voltage, with removal capacity increasing with higher voltages. The removal efficiency of the particle electrodes at 6, 9, and 12 V were 95%, 97%, and 99.8% respectively, and the biosorbent could be reused up to ten times without significant loss in efficiency.
