Master of Chaos and Order: Opposite Microstructures of PCL-co-PGA-co-PLA Accessible by a Single Catalyst**

Ruth D. Rittinghaus et al.

Summary: This article introduces a iron guanidine complex catalyst for the synthesis of copolymers with different microstructures. The catalyst exhibits high activity and fast polymerization of lactide, glycolide, and epsilon-caprolactone. By changing the polymerization set-up or sequentially adding monomers, both block and random-like copolymers, as well as copolymers with highly dispersed repeating unit distributions, can be obtained. This research represents an important step towards biocompatible polymers with tailor-made properties, contributing to a sustainable and circular material flow.

Guanidine Carboxy Zinc Complexes for the Chemical Recycling of Renewable Polyesters

Martin Fuchs et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the alcoholysis of renewable polyesters and found that the activity of catalysts can be influenced by the substituents introduced at the ligand backbone. Electron density donating groups were found to enhance the catalyst activity, resulting in higher polyester conversion rates. The study also demonstrated the possibility of catalyst recycling, industrial applicability, and solvent-free alcoholysis with full degradation.

Guanidinate Zn(II) Complexes as Efficient Catalysts for Lactide Homo- and Copolymerization under Industrially Relevant Conditions

Ilaria D'Auria et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is currently the most commercially relevant biodegradable polymer, and the use of zinc(II) catalysts in the ROP of L-lactide under high temperature conditions has shown stability, high yield, and reduced monomer racemization, making it suitable for industrial applications. Additionally, these catalysts can copolymerize L-lactide with e-caprolactone to produce either block or random copolymers.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Redefining Sustainable Polymers

Danielle E. Fagnani et al.

Summary: There has been an increased focus on sustainable polymers in recent years, but less attention has been paid to the end-of-life fate of polymers. It is suggested to place more emphasis on chemical recycling to promote a closed-loop plastic economy, in order to keep us on the path to sustainability.

Active in Sleep: Iron Guanidine Catalyst Performs ROP on Dormant Side of ATRP

Ruth D. Rittinghaus et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the synthesis of block copolymers simultaneously polymerizing lactide and styrene using iron guanidine catalyst, showcasing the versatility of the catalyst in different polymerization mechanisms. This orthogonal copolymerization by a benign iron catalyst opens up new pathways to biocompatible polymerization procedures, expanding the scope of ATRP applications.

Chemical upcycling of waste polyolefinic plastics to low-carbon synthetic naphtha for closing the plastic use loop

Leilei Dai et al.

Summary: This study aims to convert waste plastic into low-carbon synthetic naphtha for new plastic production using catalytic pyrolysis technology. Experimental results show that Al2O3 pillared montmorillonite clay can produce high amounts of alkanes, while ZSM-5 produces aromatics and olefins. This technology offers promising potential for the recycling and resource utilization of waste plastics.
