Exfoliation Energy as a Descriptor of MXenes Synthesizability and Surface Chemical Activity

Daniel Dolz et al.

Summary: MXenes are two-dimensional nanomaterials obtained by selectively extracting the A component from MAX phases, with the synthesizability influenced by the exfoliation energy E-exf. The E-exf values decrease when MAX is a nitride, when moving along a metal M component d series, down a p-block A element group, and with thicker MXenes. Furthermore, E-exf biases, or even governs, the surface chemical activity of MXenes, leading to stronger attachment of species on more unstable MXenes with higher E-exf values.
