Assessment of heavy metal contamination and its effect on earthworms in different types of soils

F. Verma et al.

Summary: Earthworms play a crucial role in soil health by promoting mineralization of soil organic matter, nutrient production, and plant growth through their feeding habits. However, unsustainable development has led to soil degradation and increased levels of heavy metal contaminants, with industrial soils showing the highest concentrations. The study found varying levels of heavy metals in agricultural, non-agricultural, and industrial soils, as well as differences in earthworm species abundance and diversity across different soil types.

Research Progress on Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil of Smelting Sites in China

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: Contamination by heavy metals in China has significant impacts on soil quality, food security, and human health. Mining and smelting activities release massive amounts of heavy metals into the environment, causing severe contamination and hazards to plants, soil organisms, and humans. Pb toxicity is particularly harmful to children. Novel approaches for controlling and reducing heavy metal pollution, such as hydrometallurgy and phytoremediation, offer potential solutions. However, environmentally friendly remediation of contaminated sites remains a challenge.

Ecological risk source distribution, uncertainty analysis, and application of geographically weighted regression cokriging for prediction of potentially toxic elements in agricultural soils

Prince Chapman Agyeman et al.

Summary: A resilient environment is crucial for long-term sustainability, and receptor models are effective tools for identifying pollution sources. In this study, soil samples from Frydek Mistek in the Czech Republic were analyzed for eight heavy metals. The results revealed that geogenic factors, steel industries, vehicular traffic, and agro-based activities were the primary sources of pollution. The ER-PMF model showed higher efficiency in source identification compared to the PMF model. Furthermore, mapping using GWRCoK demonstrated better spatial prediction than GWR. It was found that the ecological risk level in the study area was moderate to high, while the toxicity level was moderate to extremely high. The study highlights the importance of using pollution assessment-based receptor models for estimating distribution sources.

Toxic metal concentrations and Cu-Zn-Pb isotopic compositions in tires

Hyeryeong Jeong

Summary: This study presents data on toxic metals and Cu, Zn, and Pb isotopic compositions in tires. Zn had the highest concentration in all tire samples, and Ni, Zn, Sn, and Sb had higher concentrations in domestic tires while Cu, Cd, and Pb concentrations were relatively higher in imported tires. The isotopic compositions of Cu, Zn, and Pb in tires showed differences compared to other non-exhaust traffic emission sources.

Ecological risk assessment and source apportionment of heavy metals contamination: an appraisal based on the Tellus soil survey

Ali Keshavarzi et al.

Summary: The study in Northern Ireland examined the level and spatial distribution of heavy metal pollution in industrial, agricultural and urban soils through the evaluation of selected heavy metals and physiochemical parameters. Results showed high levels of heavy metals with severe pollution risk, particularly As, Cd, and Pb, indicating ecological threats. Mixed factors of anthropogenic and lithogenic sources contributed to the presence of heavy metals, as revealed by multivariate statistical analysis.
