D-π-A-structured organic sensitizers with π-extended auxiliary acceptor units for high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells

Hyung Jin Noh et al.

Summary: Two new D-pi-A structured dyes (SGT-160 and SGT-161) were designed and synthesized to modulate LUMO energy levels and investigate photophysical, electrochemical properties, and cell performances. The insertion of an additional ethynyl moiety significantly enhanced light-harvesting capability, while pi-extension in the acceptor part stabilized LUMO energy levels. DSSCs based on SGT-160 exhibited high power conversion efficiencies of 10.28%, while DSSCs based on SGT-161 and SGT-130 showed moderate efficiencies of 8.05% and 10.06%, respectively.

Structural Engineering of Organic D-A-π-A Dyes Incorporated with a Dibutyl-Fluorene Moiety for High-Performance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Gebremariam Zebene Wubie et al.

Summary: By systematically choosing electron-donating and -accepting groups, as well as engaging in proper molecular engineering incorporating fluorenyl units, researchers have successfully developed organic dyes that significantly improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The optimization of the D-A-pi-A framework integrated with the fluorenyl moiety has shown promising results in enhancing the optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. Devices fabricated with the MA1116 sensitizer demonstrated superior performance under standard AM 1.5 G solar conditions and dim-light illumination, showcasing the potential of fluorenyl unit integration in boosting DSSC efficiency.

Role of π conjugation in n-hexylphenothiazine dyes for solar cell-a density functional theory approach

V. Mohankumar et al.

Summary: The organic sensitizers based on N-hexylphenothiazine were designed for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC), with analysis on the effect of different pi spacers and structural modifications on optoelectronic properties. The increase in pi spacer led to a redshift of the absorption peak, and the designed dye molecules were evaluated for DSSC application through density functional theory calculations.

Summary: The structure-property relationship and excited state charge transfer characteristics of A-D-A and A-DA'D-A type acceptors were systematically investigated using density functional theory. The A-DA'D-A type acceptor Y6 exhibited distinct structural and electronic characteristics, resulting in more effective charge separation compared to other acceptors.

Effect of the Spatial Configuration of Donors on the Photovoltaic Performance of Double D-π-A Organic Dyes

Pengjuan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the spatial characteristics of different donor units have a significant impact on the light-harvesting, electrochemistry, and photovoltaic properties of DSSCs. The strong shielding ability of alkyl chains in the donor to its branch chains can lead to higher open-circuit voltage and better efficiency in DSSCs. The results suggest that tailored donor units are an effective approach to optimize dye configurations for improving power conversion efficiencies.

Summary: This study investigates the excited state characteristics and the influence of various groups attached to the donor group in a p-nitroaniline D-pi-A system using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Results suggest that the compounds exhibited different types of charge transfer excitations and strong hyperconjugative interactions stabilizing the systems.
