Exploring the influence of tin in micro-structural, magneto-optical and antimicrobial traits of nickel oxide nanoparticles

A. Aslinjensipriya et al.

Summary: Transition metal oxide nanoparticles, especially nickel oxide (NiO), have attracted significant interest due to their size-dependent properties and unique progress in optical, electrochemical, and magnetic characteristics. In this study, undoped and tin (Sn) doped nickel oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using a citrate assisted sol-gel technique. The nanoparticles were extensively investigated for their structural, optical, and magnetic properties. The results showed that the dopant concentration had a significant effect on the crystallite size, strain, and optical energy band gap of the nanoparticles. The surface morphology and grain size of the nanoparticles were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The magnetic parameters of the nanoparticles were evaluated using vibrating sample magnetometer measurements, and two critical magnetic parameters were extracted. The highest coercivity was observed in the sample with 6% Sn doping. Furthermore, the potential application of the synthesized nanoparticles in antibiotics-independent antimicrobial activity was discussed.
