Hydrothermal formation of Fe-oxide bands in zebra rocks from northern Western Australia

Hirokazu Kawahara et al.

Summary: Zebra rock is a late Proterozoic sedimentary rock formed in an acidic hydrothermal system. Its distinctive rhythmic Liesegang-type Fe-oxide banding is a result of the precipitation of iron through the neutralization reaction between acidic fluid and primary carbonate minerals. The differentiation of zebra rock types based on color and clay mineral assemblages corresponds with typical acidic hydrothermal alteration zoning.

Summary: The study suggests that Zebra rock might be a product of acid sulfate weathering, with its distinctive red banding resembling the mottling of gleyed soils.
