Photocatalytic aldehydes/alcohols/toluenes oxidative amidation over bifunctional Pd/MOFs: Effect of Fe-O clusters and Lewis acid sites

Summary: In this study, three Fe-MOFs with different Fe-O clusters and morphologies were synthesized, and Pd/MIL-101(Fe) exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance in the green synthesis of amide bonds, utilizing efficient light absorption, separation and migration of photogenerated carriers, Lewis acid sites to promote condensation reactions, and efficient reduction of O-2 to superoxide radicals with electron-rich Pd nanoparticles.

Summary: The method utilizes riboflavin tetraacetate (RFTA) as an inexpensive organic photocatalyst, visible light, and oxygen as the sole oxidant to synthesize tertiary amides through the oxidative coupling of aromatic or aliphatic aldehydes with amines. The reaction is based on the oxidative power of an excited flavin catalyst and the relatively low oxidation potential of the hemiaminal formed by amine to aldehyde addition.
