Summary: In this work, new analytical expressions defining the electrophoretic mobility of composite soft particles are reported, taking into account dielectric permittivity gradients at interfaces. These expressions are applicable to charged particles with size well exceeding the Debye layer thickness, and discuss the impacts of ions partitioning on the electrophoretic response.

Hydrodynamic dispersion by electroosmotic flow in soft microchannels: Consideration of different properties for electrolyte and polyelectrolyte layer

Reza Talebi et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates hydrodynamic dispersion in soft slit microchannels with fully developed electroosmotic flow in dense polyelectrolyte layers. Results show that ion partitioning leads to an increase in fluid velocity and hydrodynamic dispersion, while an increase in dynamic viscosity within the polyelectrolyte layer has the opposite effect.

Augmentation of the reverse electrodialysis power generation in soft nanochannels via tailoring the soft layer properties

Mahdi Khatibi et al.

Summary: Nanochannels covered with a polyelectrolyte layer have been shown to significantly increase the power generation by reverse electrodialysis, with the sensitivity of energy conversion efficiency and power generation rate being relatively high to the difference in properties between the PEL and the electrolyte. By tailoring the PEL structure, especially through densely distributing polyelectrolyte brushes, both efficiency and power density can be effectively increased.

Impacts of the temperature-dependent properties on ion transport behavior in soft nanochannels

Mohammad Karimzadeh et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of temperature and concentration gradients on ionic selectivity, ionic current rectification, Joule heating, and viscosity dissipation in conical soft nanochannels through numerical simulations. It was found that increasing temperature and concentration ratios can lead to higher levels of Joule heating, potentially affecting the transport behavior of ionic species within soft nanochannels. Overall, it was concluded that lack of control in Joule heating generation could be detrimental to the transport behavior of ions in soft nanochannels.

Impact of finite ion size, Born energy difference and dielectric decrement on the electroosmosis of multivalent ionic mixtures in a nanotube

Doyel Pandey et al.

Summary: The study focuses on analyzing electroosmotic flow in nanotubes with consideration of ion size and dielectric decrement effects. The finite ion size impact is significant when the Debye length is comparable to the nanotube radius, while dielectric decrement has a strong influence at higher surface charge density or bulk ionic concentration levels. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of EOF in cylindrical nanotubes beyond dilute solution and low charge density boundaries.

Space Electroosmotic Thrusters in Ion Partitioning Soft Nanochannels

Jiaxuan Zheng et al.

Summary: Space electroosmotic thrusters (EOTs) are theoretically investigated in a soft charged nanochannel with a dense polyelectrolyte layer (PEL). The ion partitioning effect leads to enhancement of thruster velocity, while increase in dynamic viscosity inside the PEL reduces fluid flow rate. Optimal design parameters can lead to good thruster performance.

Tripling the reverse electrodialysis power generation in conical nanochannels utilizing soft surfaces

Mahdi Khatibi et al.

Summary: Theoretical investigation on enhancing reverse electrodialysis power generation by covering nanochannel surface with a polyelectrolyte layer (PEL) shows that increasing the charge density and thickness of PEL can result in higher power generation. This study demonstrates that by using a typical PEL with specific properties, it is possible to achieve nearly three times the maximum power density compared to bare conical nanochannels at the same salinity gradient.
